jumping out of gear???

Was asked what may or may not be a stupid question today.  When AC went to the WD 45 tranny, why did they go to the curved shifting lever and did the curved lever help cause the problems with jumping out of gear since it was adding a pull towards the curve.   Said I would ask the people smarter than me.   Den

WD's with a straight shift lever had sliding spur gears, identical to a WC. You could do a lot of grinding into gear and they didn't jump out of gear. When the curved shift handle was used (much nicer to reach) the transmission became a helical gear (stronger/quieter) constant mesh design with sliding shifting collars. They don't like to be ground into gear, because it wears off the shifting dogs/lugs. They will pull a plow all day, but raise the plow up and go down a steep hill and it might jump into neutral. The helical gear tranny was stronger and quieter and with a few changes to it over the years, eventually was adapted all the way up to the D-19 tractor.

The 220 is very much like the 45 only bigger. Main difference in design is counter shaft is stacked gears.

The WD I grew-up on was one of the last one's, it had the curved shift levers, it was a problem until the dealer worked on it.

What was a problem ??    The curved shift lever ?? Yes. The original levers only had one square head pivot pin in them and depending upon how much the shifter was used, wore pretty fast. A loader tractor would be a good example of fast wear. The solution was two square head pivot pins which helped a lot.

Then I would guess that the dealer added the 2nd pin, we had a loader in it and used it a lot.
