A little before my time. I do remember this guy, though. He got one of my neighbors, to the tune of about 20K...

Majic beans that will fix any problem you have.
Several big farming operations local got started by questionable practices. Back in early 1900's almonds were the NEW crop. Investers bought large tracks of land, parceled it out in 10 to 20 acre tracks and planted almond trees. Then advertised it in east coast papers. Sold it with contracts to care for trees and all you had to do was cash the check at the end of the season. In the beginning the owners broke even. After a few years, owners got a bill at the end of season. So most just stopped paying anything. So the farming entity took it over for nonpayment. One company ended up with better than 10,000 acres. Today 4th generation is still operating a few 1000 acres. In the 1970's jojoba was going to be a miracle crop making all California rich. Being a desert plant it would grow with out irrigation in most places. The oil from the seeds/beans was to be used in EVERYTHING. By some miracle, it is still around in very limited use in cosmetics. Do remember a little of the Jerusalem artichoke thing. Did not know of the out and out fraud involved. Thanks Coke.
