Jacobsen mower overheating?

My Jacobsen mower overheated Friday. It has a inline 4 cylinder Ford engine, VSG 41111 -6007-b in it. Over the last year it would occasionally get to 220 if hot day and hard mowing.Got up to 240 degrees. I cooled it down washed out radiator and it started climbing again. Let it cool down, took out thermostat and tried it today, still overheats. Fan belt tight, full of coolant , no bubbles in top of radiator with cap off. What is most likely cause, water pump? I think radiator is okay. I am going to flush system very soon. Thanks Tracy

I would start by giving the cooling system a good flush first. Mabe possibly a head gasket going out but I'm no ford expert.
If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice.

Radiator was boiled out when I put it on a couple years ago. I didn't see any bubbles in upper tank with it running, hoping it wasn't a head gasket. I will flush it out good and go from there. I was thinking maybe the water pump was going bad. This engine is used in Tennant floor sweepers and such. Thanks, Tracy

flush it out, then take an IR thermometer and start checking temps here and there...

from the info, newer rad,flushed,tight belt, full of coolant, no stat..
Only way I can think is ...NO flow = overheating.....so I'd say water pump.

Couple of questions. First, you washed out the radiator. Did you just use the garden hose, or did you use some pressure? Just running water through it without pressure doesn't get the stuff that's caked on.
Second, have you tried a new thermostat? No thermostat will cause overheating also. Without a thermostat, water flows through the radiator to fast and doesn't get a chance to cool down.
Fought a similar problem on my TL12 loader. New radiator, new head gasket. Still overheating. Finally took thermostat housing off. No thermostat!. Put in a thermostat, problem solved.

Took the pump off today. It seems OK, but it sure is mickey mouse looking.. I am going to flush it good with a radiator flush. It has lots of rust crude particals   in it. Probably going to replace pump while I got it apart. It is not at a handy place to work on either. I will keep you posted.Hoping it aint a head gasket. Tracy

VG-411 is the 'Valencia', that's a 1.1L four.

Lucky for you, it's not the 172/192 four... they had terrible problems with steam pocketing.

Do all that you're doing, then verify that your mechanical advance and vacuum advance are both functioning properly, and your base is 6deg BTDC.  mechanical is 3-9, and vac is 12-30.  If one or the other, or both aren't functioning right, it will NOT be happy.

Foley Engines is where I'd look for Ford Industrial engine parts- they know those engines well.

I flushed out the block and radiator with a garden hose this afternoon. Will fill it with water and Blue Devil radiator flush, get it up to temp and run it a hour or two, cool it down and rinse the flush out. It had a lot of crap in block and radiator. Washed out radiator fins behind oil cooler too. It has dirt and grass in it too. Another day or two before I will be done with what little time I get on it. Thanks, Tracy

I put Blue Devil in her today and ran about two hours. Pretty sure my sending unit or temp gauge is bad. Just after a couple on minutes the gauge pegged at 300. Using my infared thermometer it all checked good. Top of tank was hotter than bottom. Flushed the Blue Devil out from both directions. What is easiest way to check temp gage and sending unit? Take the SU out, put it in a can of water, boil with a torch, check temps with the IR thermometer...

It is the sending unit. I turned key on and fiddled with sending unit wire. It would peg out at 300 some places, wiggle it some, drop back to zero. Tried tightening it up and threaded stud is loose. Easy to get to though. Thanks for all the advice. Tracy

Spoke too soon, got hot on me yesterday. I think the thermostat stuck. Cooled off, started and ran around 205. Going to flush it again. New thermostat, and have radiator rodded. Going to check coolant for combustion gases also, could have a blown head gasket. Tracy

Checked coolant tank for combustion gases, none found. Did flush system again,then flushed out flush really good. Bought a new thermostat and drill small hole in flange. Checked it in pan of water. It tested OK installed it.. Had the radiator boiled out, radiator guy tested flow and said it was as good as a new one, no need to rod it. Installed it. Filled up system and ran mower for 15 minutes, never above 175. Mowed with it for 3 hours and never above 175. I think I got it fixed, sure feels better seeing it run cooler. Tracy

Tracy, my son has a Side x Side that has a 180 degree thermostat and a sensor that turns the radiator fan on when the cylinder head gets to 205 degrees.... then the IDIOT light comes on at 210 !!  ...... We hot wired the fan to run constant... Now the temp is 170 degrees all the time .......... Keep fan operation in mind !
Like them all, but love the "B"s.
