Last weekend I gave the shop a little cleaning. I’ve been trying to learn to throw trash away. I was dumping trash in the dumpster from a can and I saw one of my old Skill angle grinders (in pieces) go away. Today at work my other skill grinder switch broke. The gears were bad in the one I threw away. I know the switch was fine.

Thad, come wonder around Dad's workshop some day. Let's just say, there ain't no way in H E doublehockeysticks you could do any work in it! Pros and cons to each approach I suppose.

Well,,my biggest problem is,,,we was dirt poor for too many years and awful hard to change habits whether they be good or bad. What I do is if the tool is of a good name brand, I will box it up, label the box with a sharpie and put it up in a certain part of the garage. Hey Thad,,right now I have one of Craftsman's best 4 1/2" grinders, a Makita 4 1/2" boxed up waiting to come across one that has the parts I need. If I had the part you need ,,it would be on the next train to Clarksville,,,,,,

And the same for you. These Skill 7 amp grinders are a beast. The one I tossed had been rode hard and rode hard again. It was wore out front to back but the switch was still good. I have a Bosch with an in-line switch added to keep it going. Probably what I’ll do to the Skill. I bought a new porter Cable on sale a little while back. I’m sure liking it and still have that pair if HF paddle switch grinders I bought a while back. I really like them. |

My problem when this happens is I live in town and my tools and parts are in buildings located 1 mile, 21 miles, 88 miles, or 127 miles from home. And usually I'm not even sure of the one I stored it in. Just cheaper and quicker to go buy another. What I really need is a good consignment auction to haul most of it to. And it's about time to spring clean the work truck off of all the accumulation and maybe sell it.

Thad, that's just my luck. I can store something 30 years and not need it, but if I throw it away I will need it the next day. Guess I learned a lot of my "hoarding" from my Dad. He didn't throw anything away if it could be reused. Rebuilt an old barn door at the farm this week and noticed the hinge sections on the door had a bit of a curve to them. Turns out they were pieces cut off of old leaf springs with a bushing in the eye so they would fit on the hinge portion screwed into the post. I happily reused them on the new door.

Thad...i'll look in my buckets of spare parts and see if i gots a switch, when a power tool quits on me, i dismantle it, if i can fix it cheap i'll do it, otherwise i'll find the problem and pitch that part and keep other usable parts in baggies (labeled) or a couple buckets.

I have a nice 4-1/2" Milwaukee side grinder that the armature went out on. Sure would be nice to find a replacement armature.

Ok I fall into this same thing too. I got the hording dont throw it away you might need it gene from my dad. Anything he brought on to the farm was still there when he died. We had to bury and burn most of it when we cleaned out the place 20 years ago. I save some things but trying to do better about the throwing away things too.
Regards, Chris

2 things that feed this problem is when you go to town and they tell you the part is not available and when it is the price for the part is close to the price for a new tool. When I need something I saw it in the shop a couple of weeks ago, when I need it I cant find it couple days later looking for something else then O there is the thing I was looking for the other day.

Little Vernon😁😁 He drove it to town once. Had to haul me to the emergency room.😁. I haven’t switched the tools over yet. I did wash all the tool boxes and put carpet in the bottom of all them. It really needs new dual exhaust with glass packs.👍 |

I mention above that I had a Milwaukee side grinder that quit.
I had made a bracket for it so I could attach it my lathe. It's hard to believe but, that bracket fits the cheep one I got from Harbor Freight. Dusty

I never throw anything away, I take it apart like Shameless and keep the good stuff. One of these days, I'm going to have to go through all that stuff and pitch it. I'm getting hades from the kids cause they'll have to do it and they don't want to spend the money on Dempsters. I feel sorry for em,,,,,,,,,,HONEST......
Anywho Thad, I never bought anything Skill so I can't help ya with parts for that one. I always bought good stuff. Hey Thad, did you see the thread where I asked you if you want a new (democrap) governor? I'm willing to let this POS go,,,,,,,,,ANYWHERE.... He's taken it upon himself to put the whole state on lockdown until the end of May!! |

I didn’t see that post Ted. We’ll stick with what we got. One of the few states still not locked down. So far we haven’t had a major outbreak. Feeling fortunate. We also have a good coach and assistants now. We’re still ailing from that last fife you gave us.😁😁😁 I hear Nebraska is in need. 😃 |
