Was plowing with the D17D and #53 plow yesterday and the pin that holds the hook in the snap coupler slid out and the plow came unhooked....latches released and left the plow in the ground just like it was designed to do.  It's that time of year again to inspect  the snap coupler parts for wear and missing pieces and make sure the latches release properly.

That pin slid out sideways.  I would think that would be hard to do with all of the pull force on it all the time.  good thing you weren't hurt, and the latches worked properly.

I put new springs in all my tractor's Snap couplers last year and looked at the cotter keys and pins at the same time. Look at the lift latches for ease of release too!
The Snap Coupler setup was a grate unit but it is 40 years or more old.

I know it was a cotter pin that gave up on your's but the spring can be bad and you will not know it.
Here is a new with ACGO's part# for a WD/WD45 get one for all your tractors and be safe!!

If you look at the spring you can see the wear on sides of spring.

I had a plow come unhooked at the snap coupler but the latches didin't release, it thru the plow up on my back and damaged the fenders.

Even though I know mine is in good shape, I always hook a chain from the front of the plow to the front axle, just in case!

These pictures came from Craig in MO, glad it didn't happen to me.  He was not seriously hurt as I recall.

He had a bad combination there with a snap couple plow and no lift arm latches. The lift arms are pinned so they can not release. With this kind of lift arm pin you really need to pin the plow hitch or run a safety chain.
