Way back about 70 years ago I was 8 and Dad took me to the Stock Car races at Raceway Park.  A 1/4 mile oval on the far south side of Chicago.  Just outside the gate was a Tucker on display.  Got to sit in it.  Wow.  Dad was driving a new Studebaker Champion at the time.  The Tucker was way ahead of its time.   Quite a experience for a 8 year old to remember so clear it was like yesterday.

Turbos at Indy in STP Turbine Powered Lotus Wedges.  USAC put so many restrictions on Turbine powered Indy Cars they could no longer compete. A  "Woosh" as they passed in front of the fans was all the engine sound they made.
I wish Parnelli Jones could have won in the first attempt to race a turbine at Indy. Him  breaking with less than 8 miles to go still sounds a little fishy to me.   I was there that day to see Rufus Win, not cost into the pits after breaking on the backstretch. Seeing Parnelli  coasting into the pits still makes me sick after leading nearly every lap of that race plus loosing a half a lap to a wreck and a spin in the grass. Parnelli is one of my racing  Heros.   He went fast in anything he drove.
1967 was the last year to see Indy Live.   Moved to Texas in 68

Whether you saw it coming at you or going away, the cars from EARLY on up to the mid 70's, you KNEW what it was.  Most of the time you even knew the model because of the chrome on it or the paint job.
STYLE.......
Those were the days.
Most of the tracks around here were all dirt up until the latter 70's.  A couple of oval tracks that were FUN racing on!!!  Believe me.

Yes I helped work on stock cars in the late 60's. Saw a turbine truck on time in a truck stop all you heard was a wooosh noise when you looked in  the grill you could see the trailer was very different.
