Some people call this the "beehive" spring. It was an option when ordering the plows. I would guess it was used for the drawbar mounted plow on this particular tractor since it has neither the pin hitch nor the snap-coupler bell.

We ran a '49 WD with hitch pull. The PTO shaft didn't need to come out. The hitch pull was a little more complicated to hitch up, but it was a rock solid connection.

My memory is a little vague but grew up with both and I'd say the answer is yes.  We started with 2-16's with the drawbar pull and later with 3-14's pin hitch pull.  With the first the drawbar has to float up and down and remember more than likely the pto shaft has to come out with both.

That spring was common on WD's with plows up till the SC set-up anyway.

Are you talking about something like this?  Look at GrayRay's WD pic just a short ways down.

The plow that Dick had was before this set up. Chains were used on each side from the plow to the lift arms and there was a large coil spring ahead of were the pin went in (were snap coupler would connect).

I think you are talking about a "pin Hitch". that is what I get from your description, if I am right I have 2 of them.

Our neighbour had an early row crop WD that was equipped with a 3 bottom hyd plow.

There was a frame that was mounted under the tractor with a pin connecting frame to the tractor were the snap couple attachment was connected when the s/c came out in the mid 50's. The plow was attached to this frame. Does anyone recall seeing a plow like this. believe there was a chain on each side from the frame that was attached to each lift arm. Dick would plow all day long running the engine at 1/4 throttle and the governor would keep kicking in. |
