I do not stock the kits as many dealers do not .I drop all the kit that I sell across the so called counter. Only order in what I need for the shop .

There is no big Secret.                 Looks as all information had been posted early on in the post.
All one needs to do is know just what they want to do and order from any dealer they wish.
There is search for dealers on the Power Max site to find one near you.    .Good luck with what u are going to do with ur engine.

I just (finally) got set up as a Reliance (Powermax) dealer and placed my first order for a couple tractors I'm working on.

If I can help anyone, let me know!

When you get it up and running, run a good compression test on it with throttle full open and battery charger connected.....should be 170-175 psi cranking compression.

With todays lower grade gasolines is it necessary to use premium gas with 8.25 pistons?

Define "premium". I think with 87 octane fuel you'll be fine. 89 octane would be better yet. Ignition timing needs to be between 23 and 25 degrees BTDC at full throttle. Old D-17's were 30 degrees BTDC and they got updated to 25 degrees BTDC.

Man that would be a bummer I hope not!     like the DR. says, regular gas should be just fine. you wouldn't expect to have to put premium in a Gleaner E3 or allis 175 Would ya?

On a side note gas down to 2.02 here today, I thought about driving my combine to town and fillin her up. beats 5 gallon cans and Cheap!

i would think 87 octane would be sufficiant as most cars and light trucks have been running 8:1-9:1 compression for the last 35-40 years mainly do to emission standards.

Actually, 9:1 is getting low by todays standards. It's pretty typical to see 11:1 on non premium requirement engines. But then again combustion chamber technology has improved along with variable cam timing.

I don't believe you will ever find ANY other gasoline farm tractor that had more than 8 to 1 compression.....none. That ratio was apparently thee maximum that the AG Engineers figured any hard working farm tractor engine could stand without detonation problems on tractor fuel. In the case of the A-C model 175 gas, there was even a Service Bulletin instructing Dealer Techs to retard the timing 2 degrees if a Customer was having detonation issues. In the case of the D-17 engines, the retarding 5 degrees was related to center main bearing pounding with the increased compression from the WD-45 engine. The 2 degree retardation on the 175-170- D-17 means placing the FIRE mark or F-25 mark at the very top of the sight hole in the bellhousing. Please do NOT infer that just because your car can have 9 to 1 compression ratios means a farm tractor can too. Modern cars have detonation sensors to control the actual timing to keep detonation under control. Farm tractor timing on an A-C only has the RPM centrifugal advance to take it from TDC at idle to 25 degree BTDC at 1400 RPM or more.

Today's engines have knock detectors and the timing is automatically adjusted to meet the conditions. No so in older tractors.

Back in the day when dad put 7.25 M&W's in WD45's he had to retard the timing. If you pulled it low and in knocked, you didn't retard it enough. He knew how far away from the F mark to put em.I was young and not paying attention.

Hey, not to beat a dead horse...

I called into my AGCO dealer (Flieg's) in Ste. Gen. MO to order some other parts and while I had him on the phone I asked my parts guy Jerry what the deal was about the AGCO kits.  He did say the 170/8:1 kit was on indefinite back-order.   But the 7:25:1 D17 and the 8.25:1 engine kits were available according to him.   D17 Kit was $1178, part number 79015760.   175 kit was $1033.00 part number 79016625.   Mike

Well regarding the backorder. If it has changed that is news to me. I called at least 10 agco dealers in my search and all said the same thing that the d17 kit is discontinued. The 170 kit had 2 in existance and the 175 backordered indefinitely. Maybe I'll call again I guess there is a chance they ran another batch...

Hmmmm... I thought we had already determined that if any kits were available, they would have be aftermarket kits.
