I know enough has been said about looking out for yourself when working on your pet projects and we prolly could if GOD had of made us with 4 eyes, 6 hands and maybe even 3 or 4 brailns,,,,, This past Sunday I was getting over a slight flu bug while using my 4 1/2" grinder cutting some 3/16 metal when in the blink of an eye the friggin wheel hung on the metal and jerked the grinder plumb out of my hands, it ricocheted off the metal, bounced into my right knee area then came right at my head,,,,,!!! All I saw was lots of blood shooting out of the wound and all over me,,!! I managed to jerk the cord to unplug it and started to yell for my Son, Jamie to come help me. He did not hear so I started crawling to my car since I could not stand on the injured leg and started to honk the horn till he finally heard my screams. He took me to ER and when the nurse saw my mess, they wheeled me right into the Drs office and started the cleaning up. They fished some small pieces of grinder wheel out of the cut and started to sew it up after two shots of super powerful pain meds,, I did mention to the nurse that she had just cut up my best pair of work pants,,,,she smartly says,, "Well, if you hadn't been yelling so much when I was trying to pull your pants down,,,I wouldn't have had to cut em up to get to the wound, ![]() ![]() It took 7 stitches to close me up and truth be known,, how could you avoid this type of close call,,,? Unless you just want to stop working on your pet projects,,,,, Just BE CAREFULL,,,!! |

Yeah, them 4-1/2 inch grinders are hell! I gots about an inch scar on my left thumb from one, where the cut-off wheel got pinched in a cut, shattered, and landed there. My rule of thumb states, both hands on the grinder, and you dont lose control. In retrospect, and with 20/20 hindsight, that is...

Those are the most dangerous tool we use.
I hope you heal up quick that’s a bad deal. I have an old welding helmet I use when I have to cut a lot with one. Usually just pick it up for a quick cut and that’s when it will get you. Nearly lost all my upper front teeth to an exploding cutoff wheel. |

In a former career a man lost his life to one of those. Grinding wheel exploded and pieces entered through his eye. Safety glasses and face shields everyone!!
Hope you heal fast and get back at it. Always vigilant Edited by plummerscarin - 05 Dec 2023 at 6:20am |

Glad the ER personnel got you patched up and on the mend. No matter how careful we try to be accidents still happen. Those 4 1/2 grinders are dangerous, especially when using a cutting wheel.

Had to get stitches in my wrist one time when I was trying to hold something with one hand and grind with the other. Now always try to secure things and use 2 hands on the grinder. Other thing is bench grinders when you try to hold a small item with you fingers or even if you hold it with a pliers and it gets launched.

I applied for a position for building and machine maintenance at a place and was asked a bunch of questions of past experience and skills . After one question I just answered , I have 30 years of background in welding , machine repair , mobile equipment , and still walked in , have all 10 fingers , and can see out of both eyes .
Didn't get the job , found out from another worker - rejected as my hair (what i have) was to long and I needed a haircut . |

Have several 4.5" Grinders, Keep the guards on them, where have had several wheels exploded as got cracked, saved my sorry butt more than once. And since eye injury 1987 ALWAYS have Eye protection on.

Well, First of all I'm getting pretty good in hobbling around ![]() ![]() I did find some things that need attention on the Lincoln Mig,,,,,I did buy a new Lincoln liner that was the same as the old liner I pulled out. BOTH are stamped .030-.040. The guy at welding shop suggested I use .035 wire. .035 wire,,?? I was useing .030 wire,,!!!! Good, Bad or Ugly,,,??? the drive rollers look good. The one thing that concerns me is I tried to blow thru the wand with the liner removed AND could not blow thru it,,,,??Do I need a new wand??

Dangit, Joe!!! So, if it just took 7 stitches, then it didn't get to the quad tendon, hopefully you didn't go through too many nerves. They're extremely powerful and handy tools, but you can NOT let your guard down on 'em. I generally don't use grinding wheels in them if I can use a plastic-backed flapper wheel. They don't take off metal quite as fast, but they do a good job AND they don't shatter... so marginally safer. Wear leathers when you wire brush, lest ye become a porcupine...

Heal quickly and BE MORE CAREFUL from now on!! It only takes a few seconds to think first and a few minutes to get the correct safety clothes, glasses, etc.. WELL worth the time!

I'm sure we all have had close calls avoiding death or dismemberment! I know I have! And I have the scars or replacement to show! Glad you were able to get stitched up and should make recovery. Old Logger told me once about operating a chain saw. You want to remember, they cut meat better than wood!

Joe, look a couple inches from the TORCH and a couple inches from where the lead attaches to the welder.. Im guessing you have a KINK from stretching out and winding back up the lead over the years.. Have seen some that broke the wires to the switch due to FLEXING..

Joe... you probably aready know it... but 90% of the "failures" are Operator Error... Unless you press the disc hard sideways or overspeed they dont normally "fail".... I have lost a couple and normally due to getting it caught on the edge of the metal and it grabs it and tries to go from 11,000 RPM to ZERO in half a second !!! ... THAT DONT WORK !
