Ok I just inherited my grandpas 1938? Allis chalmers model B I believe? It’s been sitting on the farm for a few years, my dad and I tried to tow it to a different location but the tires were locked up and it would only drag. We tried pushing the clutch, making sure it wasn’t in gear(which it seems that the gear shift went into every gear) so I don’t think it’s stuck in gear. We took the clutch cover off and it didn’t seem to be in a bind. Any thoughts of what it could be. I Do not have a mechanic background so i will try my best to understand what y’all say 😃

Sitting inside or outside in the weather? Are the brakes locked? The brakes may have been locked when it was parked and now they won't release.

Not saying that the brakes aren’t froze up but the wheels will move slightly before completely locking up almost like if the tractor was in gear. It was stored outside but ran like a champ when it was put up. However if I pushed the clutch in the tractor should roll of it was stuck in gear right?

It should roll with the clutch disengaged, unless it is stuck in 2 gears. Usually you can tell that by the shifter feel. Kinda like it moves anywhere,even in a circle, without feeling like it actually moves a gear.
Since you said seems to shift OK, I would tend to believe the brakes are froze. The clutch could be froze to the flywheel, but if it actually shifted to neutral, that shouldn't stop the wheels from turning. Edited by CTuckerNWIL - 23 Oct 2017 at 7:27am |

Yes, if it was stuck in ONLY one gear, if it was stuck in two gears it wouldn't. I can't remember if when the transmission is stuck in 2 gears you can still move the selector through ALL the positions though. I think it's more likely the brakes are frozen. It's quite a job for an "unskilled" or beginner mechanic. Maybe someone on here could post some picks of the brake mechanisms from a manual. Good luck, Steve |

Try this. Put the tractor in Neutral, jack up one side just enough to get a wheel off the ground. Will it turn? do the same on the other side. Will it turn?
If either turns, then the brake on the opposite side of the one that's turning is locked.

With both rear wheels are jacked up off the ground, and you can turn one wheel and the other wheel turns the other way. Then the differential is not locked up.
If the transmission in gear, the clutch is stuck to the fly wheel, and the engine is stuck, then the rear wheels will not turn. That's a lot of ifs. If this is the case don't try too hard to make the wheels to turn, because it could wreck the engine more than it is. Dusty

Looks like you may have at least two problems: 1) the brakes are locked or the differential is seized up 2) the engine is seized. If you can locate someone nearby that is familiar with old tractors they might be able to come over and give you some advice. Being there to see what is going on and try different things to free it up would help a whole lot. These old tractors are pretty simple if you know what steps to take at what time and that knowledge comes mainly through experience.

Take the brake cover off and look in to see if the brake bands are loose on the brake drums to eliminate that possibility.

ain't familiar with B's but if brakes are on axle pinion like WD's,you will have some gear backlash to wiggle at the tire.What I'm saying is,with locked brakes,you can slightly rock the wheels.
