12" auger on a Ottowa Farm Chief 3 pt setup I picked up at auction.
While drilling holes, the gearbox gave up on the 5th hole. Cracked the pinion bearing mount.
Thanks to R. Aiken, I got another gearbox and put it all back together last weekend. Everything looked good, I used a grade#2 1/4" bolt for a shear pin. Drilled one hole about 2 feet deep and sheared the bolt when I hit a rock. Okay, I can live with that as long as the auger holds together. I'm running it with the engine just above idle to keep it as slow as possible. 1/4 bolts are cheep.
Set it up the other day to drill holes for scratching posts for the animules, got down about 2 feet, hit a rock and the dang cross on the gearbox u joint popped out and the cap went zinging off. I'm expecting NASA to call me when it reenters the atmosphere. Shear bolt is fine.
So I'm done. I think the 12" diameter is just too big for this clay and rocky soil here. Either that or the dang thing is haunted by an evil spirit or cursed by some kinda voodoo. I'm going to fix it and sell it to someone that lives in sand country and buy me a newer unit with an 8 or 9" auger. Hopefully the new owner won't have to call for an exorcism.
Thanks for listening!
Cheers,
Creek

Richard - thanks for your support! But the dang thing has kicked my axe one time too many. If I lived in an area without so dang many rocks prob would never have this problem. Maybe I'll take Coke's advice and just cut it down. Or better yet sell the 12" bit and buy a 9" instead. The bit is like new, should be able to get a few bucks for it. Hmmmmmmm........
Cheers

Dave not a bad idea, I'm just tired of putting munny in this thing and ready to start over again. But getting a different whole digger assembly doesn't mean I won't have the same prob with the rocks. Prob should just kool off for a month or two and then decide. Buying a 9" auger wouldn't kost that much and I if I bought a whole new assembly I would need an auger anyway.
Might try that.
cheers,
Creek
