Hello everyone.
Great tractor site and forum. Been hanging out here and picking over the knowledge base and reading up on this old but "new to me" I40. Found it sitting in the weeds and weather. Been there for years according to the seller. It IS without a doubt and old beater with bad seats, bad hoses, bad tires, rust, and some lichens thrown in for good measure. Had some hope of actually using the tractor while I did some restoring. Looks like that not going to happen as I would like. Seller had new coolant and new oil and I had to fiddle around with the distributor and carb to get it started. Short story is after no more than 10-20 minutes run time for transport loading and unloading and moving short distance to park it, the crankcase filled with coolant. Head gasket I hope. Looks like a long road ahead. I just hope its not a cracked head or block problem. I'll get some pics in the files section as soon as I figure things out. Easygoing4 sent me some operator manuals that were VERY much appreciated. Thanks Chris! Need to get the service manual now and evaluate the motor in the beasty for repair.

Have a good chance of a liner seal or a sleeve eroded thru from sitting so long. A head gasket will generally ADD coolant to oil, will not fill it all that much so fast. A broken head similar.

Good news is is that the motor swaps out exactly, to a D-10/12.  Also, spend the time , not the money, get an agco shop manual original reprint, they often sell for less than the reprints. I hope yours is just a HG, but a freeze crack or leaking liner may not be ruled out at this point...Wink

I would pull the valve cover and check freeze plugs first. I have seen more leaks from them than other stuff. JMHO, Tracy
