today all by myself! First time for everything. It went well and this morning my Mechanic is coming to check bearings, journals, condition of an all original engine. When I measure the crank and rod brg it appears to have no wear on standard parts...2.3725" for both...but maybe that's just what I want to see lol!

Step #2.....immediately after removing the connecting rod cap with the crank rod journal down, place a piece of electrical tape over the oil hole in the crank to keep out any dirt. If any dirt falls into the oil hole while you are working on the engine, it will wipe out the rod bearing when you start the engine up for the first time after work is completed. This is one thing I promised employees years ago I would fire them for if they didn't do it.

When somebody pulls a sleeve I always think of Pop. When we were doing an overhaul we would remove the engine, set it upside down on 2 x 4s, put a 4 x 4 on the sieve and call Pop. He would take an ax - flat aide down - to the 4 x 4 and drive out the sleeve. That was some 50 to 70 years ago. Engines were newer then and you could do it. Not now.
Good Luck! Bill long |

First thing I thought of was my friend Armand. He's been pulling the sleeves off his shirts for years.

Great advise Dr. Allis. Never thought about the electrical tape. |

Thanks for the tip Doc A. I did that and when my mech showed up I told and showed him. He said WOW he would do that from now on. He miked and said everything was good. He always puts new rod bearings on when apart even though they mic ok. Mine are standard with no apparent wear. He said with no ridge in the tops of the sleeves he thinks somebody's been in there within the past thousand hours. My wishbone anchor bolts were 3 different sizes outta the 4 bolts and my oil pan gasket had cement on top and bottom so I think someone had been in there if the factory never glued both sides; did they? Anywho I will put back together with new standard rod brg, sleeve, piston, rings, wrist pin and clips, all new top end gaskets, oil pan gasket. When the shop finishes the valve job she'll be tested again. If she doesn't purr like a growlin' kitty then...the pump man's gettin the pump back.
