Pump and a motor , pump makes fluid pressure and motor drives, moving swash plate on motor gives speed and reverse. Pump can be piston or rotary, motor is piston type.
 Most have built in relief valves and by pass valves .  Small tractore units are normaly single case with both units within one housing.
 Skid loaders, combines,  swathers or other such would be separate units, a charge pump or case drain keeps units of this type from getting air bound or running without oil.
 
Eaton, Sunstrand, Vickers, were used on many older units Hydrogear seem to be used on many units now. Can get service manual from them for different models.
 use SAE 20/50 oil in them , others seem to use 10/30 as fluid.

On a hydrostatic trans, they use piston style pumps. The "motor" is of fixed displacement. The pump displacement is variable to make speed infinitely variable. A hydro gear system is different in that the pump and motor are both fixed displacement and a valve is used to control the amount of fluid to the motor. Cub Cadet and John Deere have always used a hydrostat system because at lower speeds they consume less power. Case uses a hydrogear type system. The Case system makes for more hydraulic function capability than all others, but the down fall is more engine power is consumed pumping more fluid at lower speeds means less power available for attachments/more fuel usage. The reason hydrostatic systems are more common is they are more efficient, pumping only the needed oil for the speed selected. A small, low pressure charge pump provides oil to the pump and can provide limited hydraulic lifting functions.
