Got the little K gleaner out and started harvesting wheat today and after running it for a few minutes the reel won’t lift and the header got slow about raising got off to take a look And discovered the Hydraulics were hot and couldn’t hold your hand on the valves. Changed the filters and no help any pointers as to why the hydraulics are getting hot?

Reel speed lever is stuck in the forward position causing the hydraulic system to open the relief valve and get the oil HOT. Also, your hydraulic pump drive belt might be loose. What you call HOT might be normal 180 degree oil temp.

When you say the valve is stuck forward are you talking about the piston in the bottom that the lever works ore something internally in the body?

A model "K" Gleaner combine has a hydraulic valve stack that usually consists of four spools......header up/down......reel up/down.....reel speed fast/slow...….traction drive variable speed fast/slow. One of those spools isn't centered and is activated. This is usually due to the linkage from the operators platform being rusty and sticking from sitting around for 10 months out of the year. If there wasn't a problem when put away for the last harvest, something is stuck now. Lots of WD-40 and move every lever in all directions many times to try and free things up. You did check the belt/belts that drive the hydraulic pump, right ???

Yeah I checked the belts they was all nice and tight I got off the combine one time and looked at the valve slack and all the pistons were out in the same amount linkage is free the reel will raise fine whenever you first crank it up but after running it for 15 minutes or slow it might raise a couple inches that’s it I’m beginning to wonder if that second lift cylinder has an internal leak not letting oil transfer as it should since they appear to be in series and after it sits it transfers back is that possible?

The header will raise fast and smooth whenever you first start it gets a little slower as the oil get warmer

So, if there are no spool valve centering issues, slower header raising with normal operating temperature hyd oil is the sign of a bad pump.
