    Posted: 30 Jan 2020 at 12:56pm

I finally decided to cut the dang Mulberry tree  that lines the walkway in back yard,,cause I cannjot stand to sweep up NO MORE friggin mulberrys...!! What I don't pick up gets on your shoes and ,,,,and,,,right straight on the tan carpet and that stain is he** to get out. It has a 14" trunk and I cut it down to about waist high as I wanna bolt the Anvil I fashioned out of a piece of RR rail and don't want any shoots coming out no more.
What will be something I can pour on the stump to kill any of that coming up,,,??

It's been said to get a copper nail and drive it in the tree and it will die, that's how those trees mysteriously die on the Corp of Engineer's property that are blocking the second tier views of the Corp lakes around here..................

I bored a couple holes in the stump and poured Roundup brush killer in the holes. Did the trick here.

bore several large, deep holes or cut a 'crater' in the stump, pour some diesel fuel in it, let sit over night, next day, use propane torch to get her lit, then walk away. Stump will burn itself !

We use Tordon(sp) . Just apply it per instructions. It works great, been using it for several years.

tordon will work.

However if you got roundup sitting around instead, I just brush the straight stuff on the stump immediately after cutting and it is over.

Git your lightest chain saw and 'gird' the tree.  Cut all the way around it at the bottom and then up 2 or 3".  That'll kill it.  It might want to start sprouting from one of the roots, but just keep mowing over it.  They don't want to give up.....

I only cut around a tree once that was bothering me.  It killed it or at least it doesn't sprout branches any longer.

Mulberrys love to re-sprout...  The most important thing is to have e fresh cut, on the stump, so you can see some fresh milky sap, oozing up.  Then treat with at least 20% active ingredient Glyphosphate(roundup), just pour around the outer sap ring, till its wet.  You can use tordon, or almost any broadleaf herbicide(undiluted), too, but remember that these can also transfer, through the roots, to the soil, and kill other broadleaf shrubs, nearby.    If you have desirable shrubs, nearby, I'd go with the roundup, it does not transfer like the other stuff...Wink

Mulberry trees are one step above a noxious weed, I going to try the Roundup thing on mine.  I have barked mulberry trees all the way around as much as 4 to 6 inches and the leaves didn't even curl.  I cut one off, small like 3" diameter, painted the stump with acetone, I think the shoots waited until I walked back to the house then popped up.

That right there is funny,,JW,,,,Clap

Ya know I actually like Mulberrys especially the black ones, and many years ago I bought these two trees for a nurserey that were susspossed to be "Fruitless Mulberry",,,and they were for bout 3-4 years then they both started puttin out the fruit and this Black one is right along the walkway to the east yard so it is a PAIN to keep from trackin them in the house. The other tree is the white berries and that tree is kinda out of the traffic area but I sure wish they had switched way back then cause the white berries are not as sweet as the black ones.

With whatever you have for a large bit, drill 4-5 holes around the outside in a downward angle, pour straight Remedy in the holes drilled about 3" deep.
In your dry climate, may get 2-3 years use of the vice or anvil mounted before it starts to come apart.
Another option is to drill holes slightly smaller than a lightning rod OD. Cut the rod into 3 or 4 6" lengths and drive them into the drilled holes.
Rods are clad but enough copper to kill most any tree, just cut very hard and you can take the teeth off a hack saw in a couple minutes.
I used a Dremel Tool to cut a bunch of lengths and the 4"-6" stumps I used them on could be pushed over with your foot within 12-18 months.

Actually, around here, a big mulberry stump can last for years.  We used mulberry for fence posts, as termites didn't seem to like them.  Don't know if this holds true, in the desert, though...Wink

1 jug ( US gallon) of vinegar
1 cup of salt
3-4 srirts of liquid dish soap

I find it best to pour vinegar into open pail, add salt, stir well until dissolved, then add soap, stir to mix in soap. You can poru back into original vinegar jug..just be SURE to remove label and mark it 'KILL ALL'.
best to apply 10-12AM, after morning dew is gone but before 'heat of the day'. Usually stuff dies by 3-4PM that day !

Holy shi$  I think you better come south of the boarder  with a red tank labeled diesel fuel and fill it up with roundup before you go home.  Never want to run out of fuel.Wink

Tordon is the best but straight Roundup will do it. Might have to do a couple treatments with Roundup.
Tordon is a one time deal----That's great stuff!

Does your lawn need cutting?  Generally speaking, if the grass needs cutting, then sap is runnin, and you can make a fresh cut, about 2" lower than the old cut, to apply the RU in.  Cut don't have to be all the way across the stump, just through the bark...Wink

I used to carry a bow saw with me when planting along a fence line or next to a creek, i'd cut off branches overhanging the field while standing up on the tractor, then squirt the cut part with tordon. had it in a spray bottle. by the time of mid summer the whole tree was dead just from that cut branch. mulberry is good firewood, and Joe...if the tree you cut down has a log as long as the width of your lambo...you can mill you out a colorful rear bumper for it! after you kill your stump, and the top is dry, spray some water sealer on the top, that should keep it from rotting away for a couple years. may hafta do repeat treatments each year.

The last 2 mulberrys I had ( mother, daughter) I did the diesel, burn method. Took days as it slowly smoldery-burned it all. I drilled lots of 1" holes, 1 foot deep with a spade bit, filled with diesel, came back next morning and lit it up. Need big holes to let air in,smoke out...
I woodn't use a stump in the ground for an anvil base BTW. Stump is still kinda living or rotting in the soil...NOT a stable platform....cept for a maybe flower pot.
