I made this change with my B, but did not change from points to electronic module. I used a CS 130 alternator (voltage regulator no longer needed), 12v coil and lights. I also replaced the amp gage with a volt gage. Something to stop the current flow to the alternator when the engine is stopped will be needed to keep the battery from discharging (I used a small signal light wired into the exciter wire line). I kept the 6v starter, but had it thoroughly checked before using it. I also changed to an electric solenoid switch for engaging the starter (more safe than a pull rod around kids). Since I had to entirely rewire it, I chose to use neg. ground. Here is a picture someone had previously posted.

I might should have said that the diagram shows a resistor and 6v coil. It is not clearly marked on the drawing. Sorry. Steve at B&B has great setups for this conversion as well as instructions and extensive knowledge as to what it takes to make the change safely and trouble free.

I used one of of Steve's kits, it is really slick, comes with complete instructions and it totally complete right down to the silicone grease for the connections.

My question is WHY? Use the correct battery cables, and keep them clean and you are fine. I can start my WD45 at -20 on six volts.

I've got a nearly brand new ballast resistor available if you decide to go that way. You can have it for $5 plus shipping. I decided not to use it after I bought it.

If you have a generator put in 12 volt battery, change light blubs and you are ready to go. if you have an alt. you need to put a resistor between battery and coil and you are ready to use. Don't need to do anything else

On my post I said if you have an alt you need a resistor in the line from battery to coil. You only need this if you don't have a mag. Generator or alt. makes no difference

I have always been told that the coil voltage rating needed to be the same as the battery, or if 12v battery use a resistor in line between the battery and 6v coil. What about it from the electrical guru's??

As John mentioned, we offer a complete 12V conversion kit for the WD/WD45 in kit form with step by step instructions. Gives you eveything needed for wiring along with the correct switches & Voltmeter. We also offer an optional frame rail Alternator mount to position and dial in the Alternator to the engine. Drop us a line or give us a call. Be glad to help you out. Thank you John for the mention!

Stan, the 6v VS 12v question came up on the "N" Ford tractor board some time ago. Somone did the math to figure out voltage vs. amperage on a coil so the the points would live. I'm sure they came up with a coil primary circuit of 3 to 4 ohms that would keep the amps down to where the points would last. I'd like to say the amps were in the 1-2 range. Can't remember for sure.

I'm getting a "not in use" message when I tried to call your shop at 973 632 5596. Has your number changed?
