all engines basically work the same... Put the throttle lever at LOW and see that the carb lever goes to the stop...
Disconnect the carburetor rod running up to the governor cross arm at the front left corner of the engine.... Pull the throttle lever on the column up to WIDE OPEN....... Pull the rod attached to the carburetor WIDE OPEN..... See that the rod aligns with the governor cross arm... If not, BEND the arm fore or aft until they rod and arm align.... reassemble... make sure the cross arm does not touch or drag on the thermostat housing / etc.... make sure the carburetor arm and rod do not touch or drag on the engine block or manifold.

OK,,got the new carb installed and hooked up and the setting of Gov rod was same as I did years ago and per Steve's post,,, The engine would surge with the old carb and surges even worse now,,,,,HOW to address the engine surging,,,,? I can hold the rod from governor and will stop surging and run steady but staarts surging soon as you change the RPM's with throttle,,,,?????

Do you have the anti-surge spring installed and hooked up correctly? My D15 will surge when cold until I pull the throttle wide open then it smoothes out.

Joe... it surges because the carburetor is not matched exactly to the motor.. On the FACTORY carb, you can adjust the screws to get "better".. but many still need the SURGE SPRING....... If you install an AFTERMARKET carb, there is a better chance that it is not matched as well to the motor and will surely need the spring.
If you use a random spring, your going to have to play with the length and tension to get it right... You can get an idea by how hard you have to HOLD the rod with your finger to calm down the surge.. Edited by steve(ill) - 19 Nov 2023 at 1:15pm |

OK,,I got a "hurry up" Spring Kit from all places,,,,Harbor Freight,,,bought a whole box of about 50 assorted springs and found one that works many wonderfuls but had to ADD some tie wire to make it longer and it does the job great. The aftermarket carburetor is a clone of the Marvel Shebler that came with the engine and has the same adjustments, the big thumb screw on front of carb and a small jet at the center of carb,,,,HOW are these two adjusted??

Normally i set bottom out the screws and then back them out 1.5 turns..... Start the tractor, let it set at high idle and "adjust as needed" ... sometimes you got to play with it to get things close to what you want..
