When polishing out the galling, how much can I remove  without getting in trouble? The inside  shaft polished off real clean while chucked in the lathe but the short shaft is a lot worse right under the gear as in picture.  Am I going to mess up by taking too much out of the inside? Thanks

They run pretty close together. That is why they occasionally seize when bearings get worn a bit. I have opened them up as much as .010" (removing .005" x two) without any regrets. Too loose and they can't ever do what they did.

Thank you for that information, I am going to take some more off, no reason to do this twice!
