 Topic: How long can primer sit before paint?

My reason for asking I’m starting work on the doors for my project truck. Once the body work is done I’ll move on to other parts. It may be a few months before they get paint.
What to prime with and how long can it sit?

At least 6 months.outside, in snow... according to my old Willys Pickup. I'd use an 'acid etch ' primer, maybe epoxy, or 'high build'. You'll have to sand it down and reprime just before painting.

primer will seal up the steel , filler , etc and protect everything from rust, damage while in storage..... as Jay said, the primer should be lightly sanded when you get ready to apply the finish coat ..... etching primer is a great idea as it STICKS to the metal really good.. A flash coat just prior to the final paint might be a good idea, as jay said..

I don’t mind to spray an extra coat I just don’t want to have to take every part down to bare metal again.

nah... primer can set forever on a car... just got to sand a little to get any oxide off and then a fresh thin coat on top............ replacement fenders / doors come primered ( from China) and can set for months before resell..

As steve Noted, light sand, even as light as 1000gr, just to knock off Slick or Oxidation. Normal Limit is within 12 hours to not require sanding.

If it has sealer either under it or in it it can set. otherwise it need to be sealed within 12 hours or before it gets wet. buildable primer dosent seal and the metal undernieth will rust . it will come out later after you paint and it bubbles up.
