I'm not a diesel tractor guy most of the time but had something odd happen while I was running one today. After an hour of brush hogging I shut the engine off to adjust the brush hog. When I went to restart, there wasn't enough juice to crank it over - it'd slowly turn over part of one revolution and then quit. Did this several times and then decided to let it sit and ponder its sins. After about 10 minutes and I checked the battery cables - all seemed tight, and none moved when I leaned on them. And then it cranked right over and fired up. I've started that tractor any number of times cold, and it fires right up. Any ideas what was going on here? Thanks for any ideas!

Dave, sounds like a cell in battery is going south. When ones starts cold easily and wants to lag or drag warm, that is normally the culprit. Have your battery teasted. HTH Tracy Martin

I agree with Tracy. My D17D when I first got it would start ok cold, but if shut down warm would not crank fast enough to restart until cool. I had one 1000cca battery in it at the time. I put a 2nd 1000cca battery in it and then it started reliably from then on. Have the batteries tested and alternator/generator tested.

Finally got a chance to read the posts above - thanks, guys. I have passed along the ideas to the tractor's owners. My bet is a funky cell as my buddy had similar troubles with this tractor before and found he had some battery issues. I'm guessing that the replacements weren't much better than the ones he had trouble with.
