I wouldn't think it will either. Good starting point atleast. Can always make a steel one later on if need be.
Hopefully be getting the head check for cracks in the next couple weeks at carquest. Then porting and polishing. Then off the machine shop to get the spring pockets opened up for the bigger springs. Then back to carquest for new guides, grinding the valves and seats then a surfacing. Then the head will be done! |

If this 17 puller holds up to built 426 they should be considered one of the best tractors ever built. Seems to me they would almost been impossible to wear out! Leon R Cmo

I drag raced for quite a while and really enjoyed fabbing things that you just couldn't buy. I am sorta glad there is no tractor pulling down here but enjoy following the projects you all build.

She's not dead, just on hold. Milk price sucks, so no play money. It will get done, sooner or later!

Well guys, little update. Been a very slow build on this thing but a little progress it coming. I brought the head to the local advance auto to be checked for cracks and it has none. So now I will be either having him counter bore the spring pockets for the bigger springs or a local machine shop. Then back to advance auto for a valve job. Then home to port and polish it. So I'll let y'all know how it goes in the coming weeks.

Local advance auto/old carquest machine shop will be cutting the head for the bigger valve springs. I gave him the box of new guides, springs, locks, retainers and the old valves. Told him to grind them if needed and to surface it if needed. Said he would start on it prolly next week. Shouldn't be to bad for cost. Can't wait!

I'll be using some comp cams beehive valve springs. The part number is 26120 along with the corresponding BBC retainers and locks. At installed height the pressure is 80lbs. Machinist told me the boom said factory was 40lbs. So I think double will be fine. Lol I looked up what a 12 valve cummins with the heavier springs is, and supposedly they are over 100lbs installed. So I think this will be fine. I can always shim these up.

That head looks TOO smooth. When I was at CAT, as a line inspector, all diesel heads were milled and couldn't be too smooth, in order to bite and hold the head gasket.
I'm NOT a diesel mechanic and have never played one on TV, so take this with a grain of salt |

Charlie, I hear the new tech in gaskets require that smooth finish...I'm no authority. Maybe Brian Jasper Co can enlighten.
