Anyone know a source for the rubber brake arm boots for HD6G. Mine got wore out, mice got into the brake disk compartment and what a mess (disks welded together). Never want to have to redo again what I just redone. Thanks

i had the same thing happen to a hd5g loader. the mice will chew through the rubber. my solution which i am still working on is to make plates to cover the holes and hold a small round wire brush like you use for cleaning copper fittings for the rod to pass through. it is only in idea stage but i do not want mice in my clutches again. also, make sure the holes in the bottom of the clutch housing have big cotterpins of something in them so mice cannot get in there either. i will post pics once i have made them. it may be awhile though.

"dads" -- I had the same mice problem on my HD5G -- what a mess. I'm considering making some covers from 1/2" thick rubber conveyor belt and just sliding them up against the housing each time I finish using the machine. Will depend on friction between the piece of belt and the rod to hold the cover in place. (may come up with a way to fasten them to the outside of the housing, but for now -- dunno). Regarding the drain plugs, I'm going to get some pipe plugs and drill a small hole in each one to allow drainage (probably a 3/16' or 1/4" hole) -- hopefully that will keep mice out. P.S. while I had the steering clutches out this summer, during hot weather, went out to work on it one day and a big blacksnake was cooling himself in the bottom of one of the clutch chambers. I found 3 snake skins near the end of the loader arms over the summer. Non poisonous snake are my friends.........they eat mice! |

Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it?

i thought about taking plates and sliding them in the brake shaft with a small extension spring and a clamp to hold the plate up against the housing. that way, should you park it with the brakes locked for a short time, the plate would still be up against the housing. i like steel plates as mice cannot chew steel unless they learn to use my torch. those pesky buggers seem to get in the tightest places and will chew on anything.
ps. i had to cut my drum in pieces to get the clutch out as the plates were rusted fast to the drum and would not allow the clutch to slide in like it should to get it out. what a waste.
