HD6 locked in 3rd gear

I have our HD6 and blew a shift it is locked in third I believe and shifter is out of place somehow. Can I pop the top off or is this a big project?

They are pretty simple.  remove the two bolts that the shifter pivots on and pull the shift lever out of the top.  then you can see the shift rails and have a look.  likely you just came out of the gates because its worn.  put in neutral with a bar and check pivots for wear.  you can build up with a welder and/or make new pivot bolts then reinstall

common problem on the shift tower being worn 
couple things need to be fixed 
the bolts into the round tube in yoke wear as does the tube 
roll pin through yoke wears and gets sloppy and shift ball at end of yoke slips by shift rails 
ball end wears on both flat side and round ball end and slides between shifting rails 
All this is easily fixed IF you have access to welder and a lathe

Thanks for the replies! Came apart repositioned the shifter and spent the afternoon clearing trees on fence line. Sweet machine for 60+ years old.
