Good afternoon and happy new year. My HD6E front idler wheel flange is worn out and needs reconditioning. I'd like to build it up by stacking strips of soft steel, forming and welding each on top of the other until I'm close to the right profile, then finish it off with weld. I'm not a trained welder, I've been a farmer for 40 years and I taught myself both stick and wire weld, I've just never made this kind of repair. I would appreciate any advice on this repair and any other comments or advice on how I can get more life out of my front idler. Also, I've attached a pic of one of the guide pins for the idler guide strap. Is the pin supposed to be tapered like that or is that wear? I plan to replace the upper and lower guide straps. I like my machine and would like to keep using it. Thank you.

the pin is 2 dimentions, center is larger diameter to fit into truck frame hole - protuding part is smaller diameter to fit into wear plate that sets on truck frame - this part can be dimentioned to take up slop in worn truck frame casting . the wear plates can be shimmed to remove excess clearance and the smaller diameter of the pin would hold the wear plate and shims into alignment with truck frame
