Crawler has been a beast for me and did so much already, can't be mad but....
Engine starting sounding like it running on one cylinder, smoking white and lots of what appears to be water coming from exhaust. Still revs up but when I try to go in gear, it doesn't have power. No water in crankcase oil. Ideas? Thanks |

You could removed the valve cover you should have a mall fuel line is leaking

If you're not familiar with 2cycle Detroit Diesels there are fuel lines under the valve cover Gemdozer is thinking of. The ferals go bad or they plane break. Maybe feral is not the right word. But known place to look for fuel leaks.

Thanks for the reply! Sorry, been busy. I pulled valve cover when engine was off. Didn't notice a lot of fuel.
I'm thinking it's water coming out of exhaust, not fuel. I guess I'll run the the engine with valve cover off and look for leak that way? It's getting harder and harder to to start. Lots of cranking and pretty much needs a shot of ether.. |

Ray is correct in the ferrule of the lines can split from repeated, or excessive tightening of the gland nut. This problem sounds of an injector that is not spraying correctly. If "water" is blasting from the exhaust and no rainwater, or coolant has found it's way into the cylinder, this is the first thing to check as it is probably unburned diesel fuel. You mention the engine is down on power so I'm inclined to believe you have a fueling problem. I'd pull the injectors and send in for rebuild as a maintenance item.

If you have a compression leak into coolant system it should show in radiator as bubbles .
A broken injector line flare is common if lines are removed and or overtightened , they crack just above double flare . You can pull the injectors from the tubes , and using a spark plug style compression tester with rubber end to seal inside tubes , find out IF bad valves are creating starting problem . If low on power when running could be injecting problem , timing problem as the stroke of the injector is set with a pin gauge to adjust the compression of plunger in injector . HV7 injectors used in most engines . Bad starting can also be lack of air from dirty oil bath air filter - element or bowl full of dirt or sucking water into air system . The small opening in bottom of blower housing that is suppose to be open is often closed off with a 1/4 pipe plug as it sometimes looks like it leaks oil - but is a drain opening and needs to be kept OPEN Rack out of adjustment so both injectors are not timed right or opening will cause loss of power .
Dirty fuel filters so injectors do not have fuel supplied at proper flow to and from housing will create a problem - fuel pump is low pressure and not injection pressure unit and supplies around 40 PSI to fuel rail in head and to injector in and out lines . The outflow from back of head has a restrictor to create backpressure before returning fuel to tank . |

You guys are so incredibly knowledgeable, thank you so much for taking the time to share your wisdom on these special machines. I was able to get her running with a good jump and a shot of ether and she seems to be running alot better. No water from exhaust. I think I let her get to Hot and thermal expansion caused something. Thankfully I let it cool off overnight. Now to figure out why all my coolant leaks out and see if I can stop that.
Definitely some drips from what look like freeze plugs and the "t handle" (pressure relief valve?) Below the upper radiator hose. As far as I can see the Injectors and fuel lines seem to be fine. The engine itself was supposed to have been recently overhauled. I'll try to get some pics to upload soon. God bless! |
