I had a couple hd 5s years ago. Couldnt keep the steering clutches freed up. I put new clutches in one of them worked good. Didnt use it for a year came out and locked up again. Is there a trick to keeping them from freezing up?
Went to respond to this private post and the mailbox was full, so will answer here .
On my machines I only had problems once wit hthis and found water had got into case as drain hole in bottom of case had got plugged. There isa 3/4" pipe plug in bottom of case that is drain hole. If you work in water then install plug but run with it out.
I cleaned inside case, installed plug, then added 4 gal of diesel , then ran machine working the clutch packs and brakes. I then drained cases and blocked clutch levers open, to drain all I could from all areas . When done i worked the machine lightly for a few minutes using light load to steer and slip clutches. then back to normal use.
This washes any oil from clutch packs and keeps moisture out of clutch discs.
I did go one step further on the HD5G loader I have kept the longest, I installed the plates from HD11 into clutch drums. These are the centised, ceramic -metal plates and they will not collect moisture like the fiber clutch plates in origonal drum. Should work on HD5 or HD6 as the clutches are the same.
