the hd5's did not have solenoids on the starter. they had a rod that you pushed with your feet to engage the bendix and activate the starter motor. you must have an updated starter. they are still available but i do not have a part number. find the tag on the starter and take those numbers to a rebuilder or napa and they should be able to match it up. good luck

I do have the rod that I push with the foot and now I'm thinking it must be the bendix that does not aways catch. The starter motor aways turns but it does not aways engage. What should I do next? Thanks for your reply

How to fix a HD5 starter: M42 Delco starter with bolt on mounting plate for starter rotation.  Just add heavy battery cable and a key switch . Can be found new , rebuilt at most auto stores that carry heavy truck parts , or from bone yard.
Fits about all diesel engines and will tun over a 700 cu.in. engine or a 2-71 / 142 Cu.in. engine with ease.
I found the cost of replacing brushes, replacing the starter drive, and finding the contact switch for the starter rod was about the same as what i got the starter for,

pull out the styarter and take a look. may just be a work engaging fork or pivot bushing not letting the bendix go all the way in or the bendix may be bad. pull it, clean it and lube it and retry, may save you alot of money.
