I have to add a section 4 links to my new replacement track chain. None of the links are master links and I really don't want to try spreading the links to put them together. Can I grind off the lip on the link bushing and use spacer washers on the link it indexes in to? If so, have any of you made the washers out of a piece of heavy wall pipe?

The chain was assembled one link at a time. To add 4 links take them apart and put them back one link at a time same as making a chain from parts. If you add the 4 links at the point where your present master pin is then the final assembly is easier.

The spacer washer you mentioned in master link is conforming to the shape of a link to index into track - then it also is shimmed to have the right clearance for width .
I had a set of HD5B track that I put on a HD5G and had to add 2 links on each chain - I also had A set of tracks from a HD6 I needed to shorten for a HD5B
Best to have a track shop do the pressing and install new master pin and inside -
bushing to match
