I am doing some maintenance on my hd11E and decided to change the final drive oil. I wanted to pull the caps off the outer bearings and wondered how to check the preload?

The preload is measured by rolling torque with the truck frames and seals removed. The best you could do short of that would be to pull a couple of shims.

THIN Shims as you do not want to cook those.

What you might do, is remove all the shims and then put the cap back on, torque to 15-20 inch pounds, use a feeler gauge around the shim area and average the gap then match that gap with the shims and add about .015 inch then torque to 35-40 foot pounds. Remember to tight is worse than to loose. Just my thoughts.

After you set the preload see if you can shake them at all. If a little loose, tighten them a tad and check again. If no shake and turns free, buckle her up. Run it a while then get your lazy butt off the machine and see if they're getting warm or hot. Recheck. (Requires getting off again. You get the procedure.) Leon
