My HD6G was using coolant. As I was cleaning the top of the block to replace the gasket I noticed that one of the sleeves was loose. When I removed it I found it was cracked at the top of the ring travel. It came out in 2 pieces. That was my coolant leak, not the gasket. I put an in frame rebuild kit in it.

KH: From Allis Chalmers Service Manual for HD6 crawler tractor prior to s/n 1332 -

All 5/8 nust must to tightened to a torque of 190 to 200 lbs. ft. " and the 1/2" nuts to a torque of 95 - 105 lbs. ft.

Quote - "After the first 10 - 100 hourse of operation the cylinder head studs must again be checked"!

Page 90 of the manual Fig.   4 shows the sequence of tightening the cylinder head stud nuts - sorry don't have a scanner.

I was just going to repair it but everything is in such good shape my father talked me into doing a inframe on the engine. is there anything i need to know about before we start digging in. any tips or secrets. Also I know where one of these are with a turbo on it for a descent price is it difficult to switch motors?

When you park it for the rebuild, think about how you are going to deal with the oil pan. I always put the track on timber at least 4 inch thick.

The turbo`d engine should go straight in where the Buda is. If that one has the oil master clutch bolted to it, all the better

The 7000 motor is much better than the HD344. Some of the surplus motors were rebuilt before they were sold at auction. The motor fits directly. Some accessories may have to be taken from the HD344. You may have to cut the hood for the new exhaust position. The cast iron exhaust manifold on the 7000 motor is a prize part. It will be less expensive to transplant rather than rebuild.

ok guys i'm alitle confused when  you look up kits online it dont show a head gasket for non turbo or turbo it displays the kits as they will work in all the engines? is this correct? as some people have told me that the ones with injectors going straight into head use different parts then ones with injectors angled into head. well alittle guidance here would help when i order my kit. also i was looking at the agkit.com site.

thanks again.

There were different pistons used to match the various injectors that were used over the years, but gaskets may be universal. Would have to look in my parts books

Books say; Prior to tractor# 13322 (Buda) Head Gasket - 4349764.
For tractors 13322 and up with 6000 engine the old orange books say the gasket is 4349936. The later yellow books say its 4349883. Just a superseding of numbers I think, same gasket. Included for that same gasket are the 7000 turbo engines.
Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can chime in and say whether the later gaskets can be used on the Budas.
I have not applied the Fiat Allis prefix to the numbers

i'm calling the budaengine company in the mornign in shreveport. ive called around and everyone says get my kit from them. so ill just send what i got back and order everything there sounds like they can hook me up with everything i need. i was going to transplant the later motor in it but my father bought the whole machine and were going to takle the hd7g transmission after this. We just hate parting out machines.

I have a 7G that had trans issues, I transplanted and now have the old one to tear into to see if can fix it back up. Seals for shifting oil were completely gone and leaking into the case, probably the biggest issue save smoking the clutch packs.

Had this one.  A bit clunky to operate with a not so great accuracy, but for a farm machine, I have no complains. It's perfec.

I had bad luck with the Buda engine company. My information was that they purchased Buda and had no idea what they purchased. I tried for over a year to get a head gasket from them but they never delivered it.
I was able to get the rebuild kit including head gasket from Syracuse Crank & Machine (800) 437 3609 Please post if you have any luck with the Buda engine company

The HD6 motor is a Buda. Allis Chalmers purchased Buda after having a problem with Detroit Diesel. The Buda motors were improved by AC. Replacing an HD344 with an Allis 7000 turbocharged motor is a good idea.
It looks as if the Buda motor company has not improved with time.

guys what they told me was there were minor changes as the head being the biggest change. i was told the head gasket will work for all 3 changes in the motor. and that the bottom end block is same. the difference there in bottom end is the buda has the 5 rings on a piston and the newer motors have a 4 ring piston. and liners/sleeves are the same throughout. they sell a conversion gasket set to put a 6000 series top end on your lower short block. this is some of the stuff Greg at kwik parts explained to me. greg and his wife started the company after Cooks closed there stores when old man cook passed. they took there knowledge and are putting it to use helping all us allis people. another good place to call for knowledge is zimmerman tractor in versailes missouri they part out old allis equipment everyday and rebuild or transplant newer motors in them and can help alot. if kwik parts couldnt have helped me zimmerman were going to be converting to a newer style engine for me. thank you all for your assistance with this hd6 so i can bring it back to life. i may have some minor details to ask like torque questions on bolts and so on. but after this project i will be pulling a hd10 w out of the woods where it has sat for 28 years to try and ressurect it.

You can't put a 6000 or 7000 head on a HD344 block without changing the pistons. You can't change the pistons without changing the connecting rods. The HD344 pistons are flat top because the combustion chamber is in the cylinder head. The 6000 and 7000 have dished pistons and the cylinder head is flat. There are deep dish and shallow dish pistons for the 6000 and 7000 motors. You can use either dish style. It was an EPA thing about diesel smoke. The wrist pins in the 6000 and 7000 motors are larger than the HD344. That is why you have to change the connecting rods. Transplanting a 7000 motor is less expensive and it is a better motor especially if you have an early HD344 with crankshaft driven generator and water pump.

thats why i put what he said cause by looking at the motor it sure looks like alot more to change over then what was mentioned. well i must have a late 344 cause my gen is run off belt. anyways i ordered the parts to fix the motor. just going to keep it all the same. and then after the 10 we will see whats wrong with the 7g's tranny. hate to part out good machines when undercarriage is in excellent condition on a machine its hard to tear one down. seems underside is more expensive to get fixed then anything between tracks is.

AC and Detroit Diesel parted when GM bought TEREX and started building crawlers themselves - 2 companies offering same engine doesn't make for good sales pitch.

DMiller, did you ever find a source for the 7G trans seals, the ones in the distribution blocks?

Not yet, my old trans sits in the shop still intact. I intend on a winter project to tear it down and take the seals to E&E Hydraulic in Union to see if they can come up with any kind of match.
