Hi there, I've come to this site to ask about the HD 5 crawler tractor's gearbox. We have two working HD 5's and a third which was dismantled for spares. One thing we've always noticed is that one is far lower geared than the other.. This was confirmed by my Dad and Grandad in a straight line "drag-race" many years ago. Recently we had to take the gearboxes out of both tractors to replace some seals and we figured it would be an optimal time to swap the gearboxes over, so that the lower geared one was in the 'better' tractor for more pushing power.
When we put the lower geared gearbox into the other tractor and fired it up, however, we found it goes exactly the same speed and has no more pushing power than before. This is where my question is: If the gearbox itself is not lower geared, what makes the slow tractor go slow? Surely the crown wheel can't be different. Any insight is appreciated! |

First off, welcome to the forum. I don't have the answer to your question, but if you post this in the construction section you will have a better chance of getting the correct answer. There are a few fellas that have a wealth of knowledge that may be able to give you the correct answer. Oh, by the way, we all love to see pictures of equipment. Good luck.
