HD 4 engine timing marks? Sorry if I have missed a thread on this subject. After having my IP rebuilt (thanks Spencer Diesel) and reinstalling, I am unable to locate any sign of timing marks on the crank sheave. It is bare metal and no stamp marks can be located. I can probably clock the crank but am baffeled by no markings where the manuals illustrate they should be. Has anyone run into this problem? Any help would be appreciated and I do not mind being called a dumb a__ for not seeing something obvious. Thanks.

If you look at the very end of the injection pump drive shaft, there is a "dot" on one side of the drive tang. Now, look inside the RoosaMaster injection pump and you will see a "dot" made in the drive shafts socket. Align dot to dot and you are very close to in "time". If you marked the pumps mounting flange to the engines front plate, align your scribe marks and tighten the nuts. If you can see flat washer marks on the pumps mounting flange, place the pump right back where it was. Those pumps are usually located near the center of the slot.
EDIT: Timing numbers (40 degrees BTDC down to TDC and 20 degrees ATDC) are there but the pulley needs to be seriously sanded down in the correct area to see the numbers and lines.

Thank you sir! I will continue looking for the marks on the pulley even though I have wire brushed it down to bare metal all the way around it. I am baffeled as to why I can't see a single degree mark from 0 to 40 degrees on it as there is no visable metal wear and Casting / machine marks are visable after cleaning. I've timed it as you suggested but was reluctant to fire it up before hearing from someone with more experience. Thanks again and i'll fire it up today.

I have a 615 backhoe with the D2200 engine. your ugly twin more or less. I have the same prob. About to get my IP rebuilt but i cant fined the 26* BTDC to align the pump to take it off and put it back on. I even took of the inspect plat on the IP and tried to line up the timing marking but that did not work. My Manuel is of no help. There are no timing marks where is seas to look. Is there another way to fined 26* BTDC so i can get this pump off and my new one on?

This is so very easy, you won't believe it. Make a scribe mark/chisel mark where the injection pump mounting flange meets the engines front plate. Make it a mark that can be seen even if the paint gets removed from the pump body. Simply remove the pump from the engine. Look at the end of the pumps drive shaft flat tang and on one side you will see a "DOT" stamped into it. Look inside the pumps drive hole and you'll see a DOT inside the socket. DOT to DOT is how it goes together !!!! Position the pumps flange right back to where the scribe mark is and you are EXACTLY timed where it was before. Once the pump is off and shaft exposed, rotate the engine until the DOT is straight UP and that is close to top dead center. You cannot go wrong !! DOT to DOT and scribe mark to scribe mark.
I've never worked on your specific application, but am beginning to wonder if the flywheel has the missing timing marks ??????

Ok thanks. I'll try that out after I take my radiator out and remove all the paint from my balancer to try and fined those marks. I'm going to polish that thing to see maybe if they where just very shallow or something. Never really seen something with out a timing mark for at lest TDC. If I fined them i'll let ya know.
