I have inherited an older HD11 with the grease cylinder style track adjusters. One side is blowing the grease right out the end of the yoke so I plan on rebuilding it. What I cannot figure out is how I am going to get the track apart so I can remove the idler. Can anyone give me some pointers on breaking the track? I don't see anything that I would recognize as a master link or pin retainer.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If you cannot find master pin which almost always has dimples in the end centres, the master link has a shorter bushing than the others and uses manualy installed washers and seals to pack out to the adjoining link rails

Most tracks have a pin that is a little longer or has a small hole in the end. You also can look at your adjuster and see if you have enough room to back it off all the way to remove the track. Some dozers you wont be able to at all but some partly due to wear will give you enough room. My allis 4 was tight but managed to get them off with out breaking the track. just a thought. norm

With the limited information you're giving here I'm assuming that this is an HD11B series,E,EP tractor with that style of track adjusting yoke. If it is and you can release the grease and still collapse the adjusting yoke to its shortest stroke you can use a jack to press the idler out or a chain and pull on the idler to have enough room to remove the yoke to replace the seal. That's also assuming that you have some wear in the tracks (and I bet there is). We've done it that way more times than we can count. You don't want to go after that master pin if you don't have to (uh, uh). So I have to agree with pinball, check and see if you can get the yoke ass. out first. Post up some pictures and let us look, That would help

Maybe yours is a different style, but on my hd11 you can remove the track adjuster without splitting the track. I used a chain and come a long attached to the blade to pull the idler/track as far forward as I could and then collapsed the grease cylinder and it came right out. I had to remove the last one in the field and then took the cylinder back to the shop to rebuild it. Not a bad job at all.

Thanks for the pointers. Unfortunately the weather just turned here and it will be a while until I can get back on this, but I am sure that I can get it done thanks to your advice.
