    Posted: 27 Oct 2022 at 9:19pm
I know a guy that has to get rid of maybe 100 (??) bushels of corn on the cob every year starting now.   Rather than scrap it, he wondered if i want it.. I feed birds and squirrels all year round, so wonder what it would take to shell the corn. I see a small sheller on internet ( several venders, same sheller) for $60- 100.  It is manual crank, but says there is a pulley on the handle to use a small motor.  Im wondering if anyone has used on of these, or has a better idea for shelling.. Im not trying to make money or do it real quick.. He just needs to get rid of it and thought if it dont cost too much, i might make a small project of it.... dont see too many "antiques" for a reasonable price, and not sure if your buying something that is already worn out ?? ......... Ideas ?

that's a tiny sucker, but should do what you want to do with it. if it has a pulley, then it should be easy, but I think I heard Thad say you needed the exercize!  the old ones bring $500-$1500 each on sales.

Well, its not my ARMS that need the exercise !!  Wink  ............ yea, i dont need an ANTIQUE Expensive one... just something that works. All of the "NEW" ones seem to be the same thing with 10 different names.. Probably all come from the same China factory.

They work pretty good, specially if they're free!.  It doesn't take much to find one in an old barn, or at a local auction, in farm country I see many going for $10 or less. Granted, you'd have to scrounge a pulley...  Then there's thisLOL!

well, i bought one of the China units in the original post. Has a 10 inch pulley on it. I have a 1150 rpm motor with a 1.5 inch pulley so i connected it up to see how it works ( did not test manually, maybe i should have...

Figuring the  crank is turning 170 rpm or 3 revolutions per second.. Does not do as good as i expected... does not PULL the cob into the machine... tried to adjust the spring loaded side wall.... dont seem to help a lot... some ears only get 60% of the corn off.... I only tried 12 ears... not a long term test yet.... Corn has been stored in a 55 gallon drum with the husk on it. Just took off today on a dozen ears..

Problems would be caused by turning too fast, or corn being too wet ??   I looked on you- tube and try to count the "revolutions per second" on the videos.. Seems like most are turing 1-2 revolutions per second.. that would be 60 - 120 RPM .... ?? Ideas ?

Look at the size of the pulleys, in the videos...  Keeping the motor pulley as small as possible, as you increase the diameter of the driven pulley, the speed of the sheller will decrease...Wink

YEA... i just went out and tried it by hand cranking about 1 revolution per second.. 60 RPM.. Seems to work a little better... sometimes you have to PUSH the cob down with the second cob to get it to feed...

My 1.5 inch pulley might be 1.75 inch OD considering the belt width.. That puts me up around 200 RPM.... guess that might be a little fast...  Got another motor with a gear reduction, but it is too slow.. Might switch around pulleys and try to get around  60 - 100 rpm.

Yeah, those shellers want to run in the 'hand-operated' speed range, so you want it at about 45-80 rpm.  A jackshaft with second reduction stage 2:1 would do it.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

We had a J D hand sheller. Sold it 13-15 years ago, think $200.
Wasn't bad to do popcorn once set.

Steve, I've got's 1 up in my haymow. I took a motor off an old Maytag Washing wringer type machine, bolted it to a 1x6 board, took a piece of twine and measured the length of belt needed. I got's the V belt from NAPA and went to shelling corn. Yep a little slow but it worked for her sheep. I was picking corn with a 227 JD picker on my WD 45, used snow fence for a corn crib. I shelled corn off of 10 acres with that darn thing. I sure was glad when she got rid of them sheep.

Dave beat me to it.  I was also going to recommend considering a jack shaft.

Got the same issue on a meat grinder I borrow from the neighbor.  It runs really fast and I keep hoping it does not shoot craps on my watch.  Confused

I have a 1/8 HP motor with a  angle drive gear box that output is 36 rpm... It has a 6 inch pulley on it.. I think it came off an old hospital bed 40 years ago... I think i will take the 10 inch pulley off the sheller and put a 3 inch pulley on it.. I have the pulley already.. That should be 6  to 3 pulley ratio so the sheller should run about 72 rpm.

Eventually i have a grinder i will put on the other end, and jump the belt from sheller to grinder to end up making bird food... Right now i buy a 50 pound bag about every month.

Well, i temporary mounted the corn sheller to an old frame with the 1/8 HP motor and 36 RPM gear box.. Got a 3 inch pulley on the grinder and 6 inch on the gear box, so it runs about 72 RPM... Not real fast, similar to cranking by hand.

Got 3 , 55 gallon drums of corn still have the husk on them... Take the husk off and fill a 5 gallon bucket with ears, then take to the MACHINE and run them thru. Seems to work OK. Could be better.. The 3 inch ears or  10 inch ears sometimes get STUCK...  7-8 inch run right thru no problem.  Corn is somewhat WET from setting in the barrels with husk on for a month.

5 gallon bucket at a time, then throw away the cobs and burn the husks... Went thru 1 55 gallon drum...... probably got 150 pounds of kernel corn... about 2 hours work.

Not doing it to make money, just getting rid of the FREE CORN... A 50 pound bag of corn cost me $13. at the local farm store.... so about $40. worth today !!  Clap

Steve I don’t recall saying that but also afraid to refute it very hard because we’ve already had 3 little snows and very cold weather, if you get my “drift”

Central Illinois has lucked out... They keep saying SNOW... but it hits the Mississippi River and then turns NORTH to Chitcago or SOUTH to St Louis..... I think old Shammers likes me !!  Wink  Thumbs Up

Took a 55 gallon plastic barrel today and drilled 100  1 inch holes in it.. Shucked 2 barrels of corn, burned the husks, and put the  corn /cobs in my "NEW CORN BIN" to get them to dry out a little before i shell any more.... Got to get that grinder going to finish off the first 150# ..
