Ticks are awful at our place this year, I can’t even walk across the yard without finding a tick on me. I’ve tried chemicals in the past to deal with them but didn’t have very good results.
Everybody is telling me to get guineas. We have had chickens in the past out at the barn and it did seem like they knocked bugs down around there some, but people tell me guineas are much better for insect control.
I’ve been at people’s place that have had them and I didn’t find them to be annoying, but I know they are loud. I’m unsure if I will get tired of listening to them every day.
I’m just trying to find out if anybody here has had them and if they did actually help with ticks.

I have had them for a couple of years and they are the best watchdogs and bug control; you can get. I have mine penned up right now but I clip one wing and they stay close to home. They can be very noisy but you will be able to tell if they are just chattering or if they are sounding an alarm. I had 10 but I am down to 4. If they annoy you after a while they are very tasty also

Yes, best tick getters you can get..
I always like having them around, yea, their noisy, good watch dogs, let ya know when a snake is around...just seems like the coyote like them better than me....

Neighbor had 14 this spring now has 0. Coyotes or foxes seem to make them disappear. I loved to have them come over because they eat insects continuously.

Had some game chickens several years ago. They could fly pretty well and did pretty good at getting away from predators. In the cooler months, they would roost in the barn, but in the heat of the summer, they would roost in the trees. Something started getting them at night when they roosted in the trees.
I think I'm going to build a enclosed coop to try and put the guineas up at night, although I hear it's hard to get them in the coop to roost.

the coons get them when they are in the trees. yep...they are the best at getting the insects out of the yard, and they do fly very well if you don't clip their wings. they would always rat me out if I came home late! the old lady....oooops....I mean the loving wife said just yesterday that if TSC had sum, she was coming home with them! all TSC had were running ducks (what ever they are), but they were different from regular ducks. anyways, you can't go wrong if you buy them guineas! I do remember them sitting out on our fence along the highway, cars going past each way, and it looked like them birds was watching a tennis match! lol

If the ticks keep up the way they've been so far this year, I'm gonna have to find me some!!
Anybody know how to get RID of whippoorwills?? Now THERE IS SOME NOISE!!! They don't even stop to take a breath!!

Just you wait til i talk with her,,,i aint sayin nuttin you understand,,,,,just might ask if she knows what bar you hangin out at  We aint had problems with ticks but i always liked them guineas,,,,there is a guy by the city dump that starte out with bout 20 of em but he is down to 7 or 8 and don.t know if he eats em or if the coyotes do .

Ted I don't think I have heard a whippoorwill for 50-60 years...... We just don't seem to have them on the prairie...

Haven't heard a whippoorwill in years thought maybe they went extinct
I think they have cut so many trees in this area just not enough woods for them to survive miss hearing them at night like years ago.

I used to have chickens and a few guineas in with them. If you keep their wings clipped on one side they will stay in the yard and roost with the chickens in the coop.

I started out with a dozen of them last year. The ticks disappeared from my yard during that time. Between the dogs/winged predators, I now don't have any left. Well, had a couple, they did taste good last fall. Once they discovered trees, they never went back into the coup. Noisy? WOW, yes, VERY! I might do them again someday when I have less predators, if that's possible.

When I had the ducks and geese didn't have a tick problem either - but once I got rid of geese - the ducks started disapearing - seems fox, owls, and neighbors dogs did a number .. Yet ticks are heavy and lot of different ones also deer ticks as well as brown dog ticks and others I have not seen before .
Son picked 20 off his one dog the other night - all within about a 3" area - about a hand length from the flea and tick collar - dog had to roll in a tick nest to get that many in one spot .

we use that "frontline" stuff on our dogs, works very well! it's pricey, but it works. the collers never worked very good.

Ducks work very well. You need a couple big ol' white geese and they make good watch dogs, but they sure leave a nasty mess.
