Yes, I did replace the coil and condenser a month ago. It still misses after warming up.

Today all I did was change the points. It is clean and not grounded. Only the condenser and coil are attached to the point.

I did recheck everything. Not sure why, but I simply disassembled everything then put it back together. I was able to get a shock off the coil contact which was OK but not a hard snap of a shock. Must of had a contact and grounded out the coil somehow.

However, after timing the rotor gears there was nothing to the plug wires. I took off the distributor cap and with a screwdriver touching the coil contact, there was a shock. As well there is pressure on the cap contact rod, thus, I think this is OK.

Shop is hot and I am drenched. Back inside for a bit with a cold one.

Earlier I watched a "youtube" rebuild and the shock they had was an arc of about 1/2". Not what I am getting.

Maybe a rebuild however, not to keen on the idea of $325.

However, after reading the various threads, everyone who bought a rebuilt magneto mentioned it was a very good move.

The "youtube" on rebuilding a magneto mentioned "recharging" the magnets! Is that a thing?

Maybe that is why "my shock" is a pansy ass shock.

i have several B tractors all with MAGS.. I have replaced coils and condeners and points as needed over the years.. I had ONE that was REAL STUBBORN on starting after a few years.. I took apart the the IMPULSE SPRINGs were weak and not retarding the spark to TDC when you crank.. It was OK when i turned by hand.. I finally got it to work "OK"..... couple months later there was a guy on this site going out of business and was selling his REBUILT MAGS... had  3 or 4... Said complete rebuild with RECHARGED MAGNET / new coil / NIS condenser / etc. ... so i bought it... WOW... what a difference.. Engine rolls over ONCE and its running.. HOT SPARK.. FANTASTIC... Never thought i would get that much DIFFERENCE !!

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Yup, it is indeed a BIG thing. All else being equal, spark energy is (somewhat) proportional to magnet strength. And magnets lose strength as they age, requiring periodic re-charging. Back 'in the day' every significant tractor dealer had a magneto re-charging machine. I wish I owned one Smile

Steve, so maybe a rebuild or different mag with a "recharged mag" will help?

Interesting. That may be the issue.

Les, thanks for the comment. All that makes since. Maybe the rebuild with a magnet "re-charge" is a good option as you and Steve mentioned.

Much appreciated to everyone!

Thinking about this and the role of the magnet..... to induce a current. If the magnet is weak, the induced current is weak, or for me a pansy ass spark.

Who here does a great job of "re-charging" a magneto?

As noted, I did find someone on the "internet" who does this but would feel more comfortable with someone here in the group who knows a good :re-charger!!!" :')

.

Are the magnets "alnico"? Common 1950s magnet chemistry. Alnico loses strength over time. More modern use ceramic that don't lose strength.

If you buy a pair of strong rare earth magnets off temu/Amazon you can recharge the magneto magnets. Mount to a bench vice and run your magneto magnets between them.

Don't pinch your fingers.

here are a few good photos... half way down the page is the "magnetizer" to recharge oil magnets... guy has a "HOME PAGE" button at the bottom..

Here is recharging a guitar pickup magnets, made of alnico.

https://youtube.com/shorts/26zdiZ6xRhw

https://youtu.be/ufhUd4wkPMs

There used to be a video where strong magnets were stuck, setting correct polarity of each, to the faces of a vice to control the space to slip a magnet between and charge it up.

Thanks Steve, quite an amazing process. Is neat to see how we use to do this with the magnetizer.

I also went to his home page and saw the AC collection which was awesome! There was also a number of fun links.

Despite the effort thus far in "rebuilding" the Magneto (cap, wires, points and etc), I decided to replace it with a distributor conversion kit. Will still try to re-magnetize the rotor just to do it.

This week, I ordered a drive unit and an electronic distributor from Steve at ""B&B Custom Circuits."

Excited to install this and get the CA back up and running!

Thanks Steve!

I am, as we message, rewiring for power to the distributor vs. it being a ground to the Mag.

Is a simple change to a 12V terminal on the toggle switch.

Will upload a few photos later.

Finally installed the original tail light. I looks awesome and works well with the push pull light switch that we put together last summer.

I have wanted to install an Emergency rotating strobe light for road travel. There was already an extra hole in the fender, in front of original tail light. Thus, I drilled that out and put on the bracket for a rotating strobe light.. Can simply slip the light on or off the bracket as needed.

My goal is to make sure I am noticeable, when on the road, to iPhone distracted drivers!!!

Finally, opened up the “key and switch box” and moved the "Magneto ground wire" to the 12V toggle contact to supply power to the distributor that Steve at B&B sent.

Now when the key switch is on and the toggle is switched on, the distributor coil will be powered.
