Snow and rain combination. I had to get a spade and chop some ice today so the water would drain away from the front of the building. Then I set in the shed and put together a couple of hundred deep frames for my beehives. I've got to cut out 15-20 more deep dive boxes. I found a jig to cut out the D handles. They take as much time to cut as it does to cut out the rest of the box. Gotta open up the hives tomorrow afternoon and feed everyone. Been using winter patties on them, with extra vitamins in them.

Sounds like you have a BUNCH of bees to care for. What is the source of nectar for them in the summer? Are there fields of alfalfa or clover or ? Has whatever is killing bees had much effect on your hives? Hope you have a good honey year.
Years ago a local guy claimed he had buckwheat honey that he produced himself. Even labeled his containers as such. Found out that he bought it elsewhere and repackaged it. Still was good honey though. I use honey for sweetener in my morning coffee and it's good on toast too. Sometimes make a toasted peanut butter and honey sandwich; like toasted cheese. The weather here in central Ohio has warmed up a bit, 45 this morning and about an inch or so of rain last night. Supposed to be around 60 degrees by Thursday. Quite a change from the single number lows we had earlier this week.

I was thinking about putting a hive out by the orchard. Signed up for a class but of course that's the day I get a call from the factory with a downed minus 80 freezer with an unusual problem and missed the class. Been reading for weeks about building and caring for them then I read it takes about as much work as a garden. Well that did it, I don't think I want to work that hard anymore on another hobby.

While I love hone, I'd rather 'rent the pasture' for a couple jars of honey... seems easier..

Your supposed to be nice them little critters you know leave the poking stick at home. Maybe sweet talk them some and be gentle. I have never had a hive but lots of wild ones in the big old oaks in my yard. Never had any trouble with them. Even helped catch swarms, of course they are full of honey to get the new colony off to a good start. They loss the honey if they sting, so then you really need work to tick them off. Like other livestock have to learn how to treat them. Just like being married, some guys don't get the frying pan up side the head very often................. but some other real often.
