Good morning I have an oil question

for yall. After running synthetic 10-30 in the WD for many years can one stop using it and go back to regular oil? I have heard once you go syn you can't go back? Thanks, Dana

If you want to go back to non syn. oil, do it. Will not hurt anything. I have yet to see evidence that switching back will cause problems although I have heard this myth several times.

WD( and ALL other tractors) have run fine for ,what, 60+ years , with 'regular' oil.There is no justafiable reason to switch to synthetic.It's a con job to get more money out of your pocket. Really, THINK about it.Read the 'claims' that synthetic makes and look at the big picture. Tractor engines run at low revs,cooler temps than todays cars,non-full pressure systems,huge capacity pans so regular oil won't 'brakedown' at those revs,won't 'separate' at those revs, and stays cooler due to the big reserves.

You'll do the tractor( car, truck) better by changing the oil based on HOURS not miles,use 5W40 and always change the oil filter.

Just my opinion based on what I've read.PS, if you remember Tom McCahill of Mechanix Illustrated he did REAL tests on oil in the 50s,60s.Bottom line, change the filter often and top up the oil.

As for needing it in cars and trucks, friend has 1,000,000 kms( 600,000 MILES) on his 318 Ramcharger.It may not be pretty(Ontario is bad,salt !) but sure runs nice.Regular oil, changed every 3,000 miles. It's his work truck,used, abused but purrs nice, pulls a good load!

Many diesel oils are also rated for spark engine use----typically SM and SL. Just check on the back of the container. The 15w-40 dino oil with an SM or SL rating will be fine in your old engine as long as you don't start it at real cold temps. Then a 5w-40 synthetic would be better.

The tales about not being able to switch oils (either way) are old wives tales.

watch using newer car oils in older engines with flat tappets. the zinc has been reduced or eliminated in newer emission friendly oils, since most new cars use roller tappet cams.

	My question stems from looking at my big picture as far as oiling my fleet all under one oil. I have several diesels soon coming into the my farming operation and I would like to use something made for diesels like Rotella 15-40 in everything. I'll buy a drum and serve all tractors with the same oil. Make sense? Thanks, Dana

	I run Shell Rotella 15w-40 non-synthetic diesel oil in all my tractors, my 2002 Ford diesel pickup, lawn mowers, etc. and have for several years with no problems. Seems like most who have posted agree that using a good quality oil, good quality filter and doing changes regularly makes the difference. For what it's worth, I change the oil in all my equipment after the last freeze each spring, even if the tractor or whatever hasn't been used much. My equipment is not in a heated garage, and condensation in the crankcase is my biggest concern. As oil prices have gone up, I have been considering going to oil testing to determine the change interval, but haven't made it too far down that road yet.

	He should be just fine with the Rotella. Usually the diesel oils have higher levels of zinc then standard automotive oil. Been running Rotella in my '55 Chevy for 3 years now with no problems.
