Going to look at a C a guy down the road has for sale.
I've seen it while driving by, looks in OK shape. He says it has a distributor, not a magneto.
Do these have the jumping out of gear problems or is that just the D series?
Pretty sure it is a narrow front, he says no attachments, he just used it for pulling stuff around.
Anything else to look for? I know I have seen this qwestion axed before, but I can't find the topic and the search thingy doesn't work for one letter.....thanks for your unnerstanding if I am repeating a topic...
cheers,
Creek

Creek...my 47C has never had a wrench on it, I ran her today for the first time since last mid summer. No popping out problems that I know of. I haven't had anything ever wrong with mine.

thanks Cap! I'm just going to go take a look. I really don't have money in the tractor budget now, so I figure taking a look can't hurt. He just put it up for sale, so I want to look at it before it's gone.
cheers,
Creek

Creek I cultivate with my C. I used to pull wagons and ted and rake but the gearing was never right for the hayfields...of the 3 speeds forward, second is too slow and thirds too fast for raking. Actually third may work ok if I install new shocks, seat and 4 way restraints lol. But 1st was made to cultivate! Dana

The C still has a sliding gear tranmsmition. they are real hard to break. I have a C and I like it. I put a L306 on and its a great lawn mower. When I was a kid I spent many hours cultivating with dads C. about the only thing wrong is bare they are light in the front. pulling a manure spreader was front tires off the ground steering with brakes till you got down to half a load.

I have heard of people having problems with the B's and C's jumping out of gear but few and far between. I have never had that type of problems with any of mine. I would say that it is not something to worry about.

Shouldnt it be a mag not a distributor?

Could have been swapped over to a dist. Check to see that it does not have a 4 speed tranny(CA). Also, check to see if it has 2 bolt holes in the front of the pedestal(someone could have grafted on a CA engine and front). If all else fails, check the engine serial#. Good luck, and I have seen the B/C tranny sit out with gearbox full of water for years and still work ok.(little noisy though.LOL!)

C and CA shared the same CE 125 Cubic Inch engine, with the exception of a few of the very very early C's that I have heard had BE engines. I have yet to see one though.

Morton, the early C's didn't have a BE, they had a CE that is stamped in the same location as a BE. Here is a pic of mine CE 35 G stamped on the back and Creek, Bruce is right, just go buy it, nice little tractor to have around.

Ahh ok. I knew there was a catch to the early C engines and I thought that was it, but hey, you learn something new every day!

Lonnie -
Still haven't gotten over there to take a look at it....maybe tonight. I am wrestling with my basement door trying to get the *Q@)@&%) thing to fit.
If not tonight, Friday for sure.

Hey, I also heard that the RCs used engine numbers stamped on the back of the bellhousing, and all began with RC xxx G/K.
Anyone confirm or deny this?

Finally got over to have a look at the C. s/n 8581 so I think that makes it a '41. I heard wrong, it does have a mag, not a distributor. The mag cap was cracked so couldn't hear the engine run, he has a new cap on order. Back tires pretty well worn out. Nothing on it - no mower or attachments. No brackets at all that I could see, pretty much just a tractor. Says it runs good. Paint is pretty fresh, looks like a fair job. Wants $1500. Might be a little high at least in my opinion. I'll go back and look at it when he gets it running. I'm kinda looking for one with a belly mower anyway. He also has a styled WC in a barn in parts. Started to restore it a couple years ago, says it runs good, but they took off some sheet metal and the tires for restoration and have not started it lately. They have done some paint stripping of the tank, fenders etc., now he wants to sell. Not sure what he wants for it. Looked like it was all there. Would be a good project for someone. cheers, Creek |

If it needs rear tires I think $1500 is high. Heck $1500 would be pushing it with good tires. Just my .02
