cost of moving dirt????

   I have a neighbor that had his old barn removed. Now he wants to rearrange the dirt, cutting back the ramp that went to the second story and clearing about 8 foot of dirt from a mid 60's pole barn that needs new treated lumber below grade. I don't have my OC46 anywhere near working but can rent a D4 from my old boss. I don't have any experience running a dozer but think I can pick it up real quick. What kind of hourly charge would be fair for a new operator with a good running D4? I kinda thought $40 if he buys the fuel and 50 if I buy it. He has a JD 3020D  with a loader left from when he still farmed so I assume he has fuel on hand.I will have to pay for hauling along with a  rent for the CAT. The boss man didn't actually say what he wanted for rent. I believe his words were "real reasonable". I just want to go play in the dirt.

	Charlie, either price is more than fair for the owner of dirt. You will find out real quick it looks easier than it is. But in a short while you will be able to play with the best of them. Have Fun! Tracy Martin

	I was getting $85.00 a hour for my FD5 a few years back and minimum of 3 hours + $70 for the move of equipment (in / out) 1 hour travel , $50 a hour over 1hr . Now the cost with fuel I would say would be $100 a hour. figure a operator costs $20.00 a hour minimum. For my HD5G I was getting $70 a hour and for the 715B TLB was $85.00 a hour with same move charge. Another way to figure it is $2.00 a yard to move material on site, doze or pile , $1.50 a yard to haul on site, and a $1.00 per yard to spread. The hourly rental or daily charge for that size machine is over what you suggest for total per hour rate. $40.00 a hour doesn't cover the wear on the machine. The FD5 is a 72 HP machine and close to D4 , I think is quicker and faster machine. Edited by Coke-in-MN - 30 Aug 2011 at 9:46pm

	I charge $100 an hour for my HD16, doing dirt work and tree removal locally for neighbors and farmers. Some guys with newer equipment around her charge $180 + hr for D7-D8 size machine. I cant work quite as fast with my old machine so i charge less. It always takes longer than you think. good luck

	Everyone wants a bargain and somehow figures if you own a machine it's free and the labor cost for you operating it should be minimum wage. It takes a long time to become proficent in running a machine, and figure the cost of operator if paid Union scale would be $38.00 a hour . I took one of the first jobs with my HD5G at $25 a hour back in 1973 and a couple of hours into job broke a gland on dump cylinder packing , cost me $70 for the gland and $30 for the packing, and I had worked 3 hours to that time .. Didn't take long to figure out I was giving away my labor, fuel and machine to make someone else feel good. Rental rates for a JD 450 are about $55 a hour based on weekly rental Just look up rental rates on sites and you will see bare cost of machine and you still need to supply fuel and operator .

	Any dirt work in the central region of Missouri is $75-90/hour from the time they leave their lot or jobsite until they have left yours. Bigger machines more charges and at times a fuel surcharge to top that off.
