Hi all, I bought a 52 or 53 WD off craigslist today for $500.  Tractor is a n/f and has been converted to 12v.  What I would like to know is how difficult is it to change from n/f to wfe.  I have a wfe off a WD45 at my dad's, so no problem for parts.  Will a wfe off a WD45 bolt right in or are there modifications that are going to be needed?

Sorry for no pic's am in the analog age with only a 35mm film camera and forgot it today.

Thanks
Leonard

Having a complete parts tractor available to do the swap sounds like you have everything needed except elbow grease. Seems like I've heard that there are "3 bolt" and "4 bolt" WFE's. You might end up swapping the complete front bolster assy.

There is no doubt about it.

You have to swap out the front bolster.

Remove 4 bolts on each side, disconnect the steering shaft, and slide the bolster endways out the front.

Yeah, them 4 bolts like to twist off so use caution to avoid having to extract the broken portion out of the casting. Sliding" the bolster out the front is also sometimes a challenge.  Spreading the frame rails a bit makes it easier and doing that is easier if the engine is out of the frame.

It makes no difference if its a 4 bolt or a 3 bolt  to you if you have a parts tractor.  Its just a matter of how the front axle pivot bolts onto the steering gear.  Same amount of bolts in the framerails and everything else.   I switched out a mangled up 3 bolt for a 4 bolt and it went right in.

I think the 4 bolt came into being when the diesel was offered in the 45.  The gear had to be shorter to accomodate the 6 cylinder and the front bracket needed a little more beef to account for the extra weight.  Dont quote me on that though, just a guess.

Ok guys, finally g home last night.  In my inspection and research of this tractor it seems that it is a '53 model with a straight shift according to the sn.  The sn on the left rear below the brake housing is WD153917 and engine sn is WD264982GA.

Also, the tractor has a pin hitch that is going to be changed to snap coupler in the spring.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.
