D14 bearing carrier seal |

Decided to go ahead and replace my brakes and repair an oil leak that has ruined the shoes. Puddles all over the shop floor drives me crazy also. The IT manual doesn’t have a step to replace the seal that I can find. I have removed the right hand side final drive. Shoes will need to be removed to get to the bearing carrier. It appears that I need to remove the bearing carrier to access the seal?

yes, going by my fuzzy memory... the seal sits in the 'inside' of the carrier. I have extra seals here ,somewhere. Used TWO per side as new ones are 1/2 the width of the old ones I can scan and send the 'differential' drawing if you want. Jay

Brenda at SLI has shipped the seals. So what keeps the differential from falling out of place when I remove the bearing carrier?

Yes I have that same parts breakdown, just no instructions on how to replace the seal? Looking at it appears the bearing carrier has to be removed in order to get to the seal. Just don’t want anything that fall out of place and then have to tear down further.

Don't worry, nothing will fall out of place by removing the carrier. Once that is off you will see how to punch the old seal out and how to install the new one. Pay very careful attention to the shims and to make sure to have proper bearing preload as you put everything back. It's quite common that after 60 some years there is a bit too much clearance between the bearing and the race.

Appreciate the advice. Got it apart, seal was ripped. If I’m looking at it correctly the face of the seal faces towards the differential.

The side of the seal with the numbers on it should be towards the rear wheel. By observing the lip(s) of the seal that would effectively keep the oil out of the differential is easy to see and on the flip side you can see which side will most easily allow the axle to slip through without the seal being harmed.

Thanks, it’s deteriorated so bad it looks opposite like you’re describing. The side facing the wheel is gone, like you’re looking at the back of the seal. I understand how seals work and I agree with your orientation. Keeping the oil in the rear end is its job. Seeing what I’m looking at is why I asked the question. Thanks

Only pull 1 axle at a time. That will keep the rear end gears in place. Remove the carrier and knock out the old seal. Tap the new one in with a socket and hammer - find a socket close to the same size (or slightly smaller) as the outside diameter of the seal. Have done several.

We have the bearing carrier machined for the D15 o-ring and add a taper to the housing to aid in assembly. It drastically cuts down on oil leaks from the shim stack.

My D14 has the large o-ring, ordered those, carrier seals and new brakes to both sides. Only the right side was leaking when I bought it but after working the tractor some the left side started leaking. Probably due to the tractor sitting in the barn not being used for a few years. Parts arrive next week so I’m hoping to have both sides done by next weekend.

Finished this job up today. Really nice to have good brakes now. Appears to be the original Bendix brake pads and they were only half worn but were oil soaked. May have been able to to clean them up with brake clean and reused them but didn’t want to take the chance. Now with power steering I added and good brakes this is gonna make a real nice hay rake tractor. Anxious to put her to work to see how she does. If all goes well over the summer she will get a paint job and new decals. Also installed new AGCO gauges to match my NOS tachometer I got a few weeks ago. Sent it to Star Speedometer to have him go through it to replace the old factory grease to make it last 50 years. I’m glad I called him for advice if I should put it use right away or should I have him look at it first. Haim said the grease was pretty stiff and probably would have damaged it. Money well spent in my opinion and peace of mind knowing I don’t have to worry about it now. Thanks to each of you for your advice on the carrier seal. By the way to new seal was the same thickness as the old one. Perfect fit.

Congratulations on finishing up your brake job! Don't throw away your old brake shoes, they will clean up very nicely and would probably last another 50 years with moderate use. If I only lived closer I'd buy them although for the moment I don't need any. I notice the bearing race has some marks of general wear.

Eric I should have wiped the bearing race before I took the picture, the bearing race and bearings were in good condition. Most likely what you’re seeing is some dirt/brake clean debris.

I remember the first time i replaced brakes on a D-17,the parts guy asked if i wanted axle seals,i said no, they are not leaking. They were by the time i was finished. Live and learn. Lot easier to learn by advice.

David are you referring to the pinion seals on your D17 or the axle seals? My D17 were leaking at both areas so I replaced them all. My axle seals are not leaking just the inner pinion seals. If they decide to leak at a later date then I will address it then. Not saying it wouldn’t have been a good idea to replace them while I had it apart but I had not ordered those seals. They can be replaced without removing the drop housing although more difficult laying your back but it can be done. Removing the housing isn’t difficult so I will cross that bridge when happens.

Really nice job! Thanks for adding your photos and description. My three D-14's almost never use brakes but eventually those seals may need attention. Congrats on that project tractor. I love mine...... A loader, a trike mower and a snow plow/back blade worker. It is nice to start and go to work without swapping implements etc. That's my story when my wife asks...

I knew of a local guy that had 2 WD’s and 2 WD45’s. He despised taking the sickle mower and cultivators off so he left them on and used the other 2 for plowing and other field work.
