Did our D17 years ago. Tractor split. About a 4 hr split, 1 hr o-ring replacement, 4 hr reassembly. Not difficult.

I think their are cute ways of removing the side cover and replacing the o-ring, but knowing the difficulty I had to hammer some pins out to pull the lever out, I don't think it would of worked for me.

I done my on a D15 last winter, I split the old girl because I was also replace the foot clutch shaft and both side brakes and seals. I broke the thingee that engages the pto, the worst was getting thing line up to slide back together. If I remember right I think Dr. told how to do it in a post but said it was a pain in the but.

The early D14-17's had a roll pin with a lock wire thru the hole. Easy to get them removed without a split if you have the right home-made tool. Replace with a 5/16" bolt and locknut using an air ratchet.

I can fix it faster and easier than a split. I made a tool to drive the pin out, and install new one, from the side cover. When sliding it apart got to be careful not to lose the detent ball and spring. Done several that way. HTH Tracy

i am real good at making tools  , does the cover on the bottom get you any where?  are there seals between the torque and trans missin that should be replaced any way ?

I have a D17 that needs the O ring replaced. So you guys have any pictures of your homemade tools?

My tool (which I don't have anymore) was a solid piece of 1 1/4" or 1 1/2" SQUARE steel stock at least 24 inches long. Drill a 5/16"+ hole in one end about 1/2" from the end. Install a 5/16" x 2" long bolt and use a nut to retain it. Place the tool inside the right side cover and place the tool up against the rear wall of the opening and the tip of the bolt against the pin while the PTO is fully disengaged. Strike the front face on the end of the tool with a 4 lb hammer to drive out the pin. Replace the pin with a gr 8 5/16" bolt and locknut using an air ratchet.

ordered some seals and bushings and gaskets today for all the pedals input shaft power director shaft its not a very big job to split it.  i got little sticker shock on the front axle pivot pin weldment 70253386 was 350.oo i am sure that it must be 4140  , but does any one know what the grade of the steel is i think i will fab my own for that price

Probably not the right material but I used a hitch pin that I cut off a half inch longer than the stock pin and welded it on. I feed 5x6 round bales and after 4 years it’s worked well. Others more knowledgeable than I am probably can give you better ideas. I do know the bushing for a 190 fits in the casting also which allows you to use a bigger pin diameter which I also did on one of my D19’s. Just some ideas for you.

The DR's tool is pretty spot on on how I did mine. Works well, but use good judgement. I make all my pivot pins from case hardened hydralic shafting, Thomson rod works well too. Just needs to be hard on outside maybe a 1/32  deep to 1/16 deep , that is plenty. Before any work is done, measure how much LONGER you can make it, and be safe with end clearance. They were too SHORT to start with. I made a fixture to keep pivot pin a rear pivot in alignment when welding.Grind the case hardened off before you weld where needed if so inclined, but not necessary. HTH Tracy
