~water pump on head/ later- moved to the block.
~oil bath air system/ later- dry element system.
~different style intake and exhaust Manifold: different intake heaters and flanged muffler       v.s. threaded pipe.
~different length injectors
~heads were different: valve sizes, clearances,etc.

different color orange.LOLLOLLOL

If i'm wrong or missed anything please step in.

Old D-262 had cartridge type oil filter and late models had spin-on type.

will the head interchange ?  are the pump and injectors the same ?

you can inner change heads, you may need to make a plate to fit over the water pump mount on the head depending on which way you switching things around.

the injectors look the same, but they are different lengths. 
so the injector ports in the head may not be deep enough or check to make sure your injectors are not to short.

Right or wrong, I have drilled the head to fit the longer injectors, just want to check and measure the depth so everything seals.

But, if you installed a newer generation head on an old block, there is no place to even mount the water pump now.

dang it i thought i had  a line on a newer head , i have been watching for parts to put my grandpa first year d17d back together,     the haed got scraped at a machine that had it that went out of bissness.       tractor has been sitting in a relations shed for some time all apart i have been working on getting it back in my  stable  scince i have the rest of the tractors

You could make the First Air cooled BudaLOLLOLLOL
