For some reason my radio in my truck will not have sound on FM band, after driving a week with no radio playing I switched to AM and the volume works fine. Tuned to a great oldies station in Winston-Salem NC WTOB. My question is does anyone listen to AM any more? And is it more prevalent in the Midwest?

I hit the AM button once in a while... usually when I am out of my 'normal listening area' .. to try to find something I CAN listen to.

You didn't identify what make/model of truck you have, but MANY vehicles have a VHF antenna for 86-108mhz, and a ferromagnetic loop antenna with a 'stub tap' connected to the vehicle somewhere for 0.54-1.700mHz LW/HF band. If this is the case for your vehicle, you probably have a situation where the VHF antenna connector has managed to become dislodged from the receiver, or a mouse has chewed into the coaxial cable to the VHF whip. Yes, people STILL listen to AM... and like FM, there's lots of garbage, but the small town AM stations can still put on excellent programming, and reach a larger audience, on a much smaller overall budget. AM stations, particularly smaller ones, are usually required by terms of their license to change their antenna directivity or run low power at night, and allowed higher power during the day, this is to help combat solar noise which is substantially more prevalent during light hours, than after sundown.

That is interesting to know Dave. Up here I use to listen to wdgy or WCMP am (local) back in the 60's and 70's and somewheres up in the 80's but then the signals started to wander and noisy reception from the AM side and FM was much less interference... now that too is getting to have poorer receptions than it use to. So pick a stations that has the most power to deliver when listening. Funny, since I sold the milk cows, the only time I put a radio on is when bored and driving down the road which isn't very often.

I tried to listen to AM 1020 KDKA the other day wondering why I was stopped on 279 inbound. All morning chit chat no traffic report. Turned it off. Rarely listen to broadcast radio anymore with the exception of Classical music.

I thought I was one of the onlyones that still scanned the AM dial. Red Bank, you need to check it out after midnight. That is where the real entertainment starts. Some of those programs are a hoot.

Listen to mostly ‘am format’, that meaning ‘talk radio’ when at work. Fortunately both talk stations in the Midland/Odessa market both simulcast on am & fm.
When I am home, radio reception is poor, so don’t listen much, if I do, need to log in from my smartphone. Edited by Lars(wi) - 29 Nov 2022 at 6:45pm |

AM 730 out of Billings, MT is an amazing oldies station. I listen to it all the time in the tractors, trucks, and in the office. I know not many people out here listen to AM, but they’re missing out

The vehicle in question is my shop/farm truck 2007 Ford F350. I will check the antenna cable plug on the back of the radio. Went to town this afternoon and listened to the channel again, they have a traffic report and it was kinda funny the guy doing it was stalling and stammering around I guess he had so many accidents to report. Realized today at the top of the hour they do a national news break but I didn’t catch who the news was from, my FM classic country used to do cbs news break at the top of the hour but they didn’t renew the contract. Right now I am loving the station I have found but I probably should scan for more channels. The music is great the only downside was the Wake Forest football game they aired Saturday.

KKOW 860 AM Pittsburg, KS plays old country and lots of ag news, about the only good AM station left. I remember when WIBW Topeka played country and was known as the farm voice of Kansas back in the 80's, We lost 61 Country and WHB AM 710
in Kansas City also, back in the day 61 Country was very popular |

When lived SLC UT can remember Clear Channel AM, as KMOX would ramp up power after 10pm STL Time and could hear my Home Town station late at night. Would fade in and out but had reception.

I can recall WBBM 780 AM, WGN 720 AM, and WLS 890 AM, all 3 Chicago stations were powerhouses back in the day.
