Reverse the fan on your favorite toy. Blow the smoke the other way.

Well, I can't say where the fires are at still, heard there was a big one up by Stockton, around here we got everything under control. Our local volunteers sent a truck to Ness county early on and apparently it ran as it made it home but the two we were left with, well it wasn't quite so smooth. They took out after the fire NW of my farm and all was good until the transmission failed and they were left with reverse only, they still got the fire out but had to basically work backwards. The other unit was going great guns until they turned on the headlights and realized they were dim and the strobe was turning a little slow, so they limped it back too the station with no lights, a pickup with flashers on in front and a firetruck with lights flashing following in the rear, going in reverse. However, living in a county of less than 3,000, nobody will be out done so the nearest volunteer fire dept. sent over a truck to take up the slack for those poor guys working backwards and their unit ran out of fuel before they every got to spray water!! Now you might think we've got some semi idiot rednecks running our volunteer fire departments and you might be right but we didn't have any fires burning Thurs. morning. Sadly while this is somewhat funny it's a true story!! Lucky for us there were some green wheat fields to stop the blaze. |

Kansas you have testified to the plight of Volunteer Fire Departments across this Country! They are good people who volunteer their time and work with what they have. Not much different than Farmers who keep going by fix and repair daily! In my County most Fire Departments are Village or small City Departments that Contract with Townships for Fire protection. They all have mutual aid agreements and dispatched by 911 call. There have been times where one Department covered for another as no one could man the equipment. Makes for slow response times but Citizens don't want or can afford a Fire tax to maintain full time Departments . Only one City in the County has a full time Department and they have been talking of merging Police and Fire to cut costs.

i'll take a volunteer dept over any paid department any day of the year. when people pay attention and take time to learn things without being paid to do so, that's the persons you want on your side!

I will say I'm thankful for all our volunteers, and it's a fact they have never lost a foundation! All bs aside volunteers do a good job and considering they leave their work to get to a fire they usually are pretty quick getting to it. |
