This sounds like a good deal for someone within reasonable distance. A 248 or 236 Perkins shouldn't be too hard to find for reasonable cost.

Lots of OEM Perkins engine parts available for either the 4-236 amd 4-248 engines.   A good project for someone close to Michigan.

Perkins was bought up by Caterpillar, there are parts availability issues developing as Cat wants to eliminate the brand.  Now considered as Perkipillar.

This link might be of help - see here: https://shop.perkins.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAkNiMBhCxARIsAIDDKNUM0GjxBhtxUe5cSFRRaJOHgng1Ii6mHHk0EyVAZRp-6CvZRDeMOTIaAnnYEALw_wcB

It would be of interest to know specifically what Caterpillar has stated about eliminating the Perkins engine brand is this something developing from newsreleases?

With the volume of engines that Perkins has produced worldwide, a manuever to eliminate the brand and related parts would seem contrary to making profit.   But then again, few of us are corporate bean counters.

Orangeman, thanks for those links! It doesn't look like they are about to be phased out any time soon. They've certainly had a good reputation and with the volume of production they've got to bring Caterpillar some good $$ returns.

The forward reverser is a Borg Warner and as for the 4 speed standard behind it I don't know but it would be a well known brand... it looks a lot like what you would see in a one ton truck except with no reverse gear. Someone on here will probably post what it is.

I'll check my AC books, to confirm that the 816 used the Borg Warner - T19 transmission.
