D17 distributor oil reservoir

   I have the D17 with the distributor at the back of the power steering pump/governor assembly. 

I've done several searches and can not find an answer to my problem.

I've also  researched the Operators Instructions and Shop manuals for the D17 and can not find any reference to this.

Does the reservoir below the distributor mount where the distributor gear meshes with the gear on the pump shaft hold it's own supply of oil? How much oil do I need to add to this reservoir?

	I have the D17 with the distributor at the back of the power steering pump/governor assembly. I've done several searches and can not find an answer to my problem. 	On Page 9 of my "Operating Instructions Manual" it says this: DISTRIBUTER DRIVE HOUSING Power Steering) - Check and fill within 1-5/8" from top of housing with SAE 20W oil. Check every 300 hours of operation. That is exactly how it is written in the manual. When I first got my D-17, I thought they were somehow referring to the power steering but what they really mean is tractors with power steering. Had me confused for a moment. The same basic info can be found on page 30 of the Service Manual under the Gasoline section.

	if you have a tachometer, you may find the oil leaks out of the tachometer drive. If you don't want to repair that (might be parts unobtainable) oil leak, pump a good amount of gun grease into that cavity. Those gears cannot be dry. They need something for lubrication.

	Thanks, Brian for the location of the information. I must have a different operators instructions manual than you. There is no "Distributor Drive Housing" section on page 9 or anywhere in mine. My "power Steering" section, (#3), says... Front support is oil sump - capacity 4 -1/2 quarts. Keep filled to top of segment gear with sae 20 W. All the photos of the tractor in the manual show the power steering pump/governor/distributor drive. Never the less, thanks for the reference. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. 	Well, DrAllis, I don't have any leaks out the drive, but my tachometer cable sure is leaky! I overfilled the reservoir and the oil is "worming" it's way up the cable towards the tachometer and finding several spots to drip out of! I'm hoping it stops when the the reservoir gets to the proper level. The grease packing would certainly fix this as well. I need a new Tachometer so will replace the cable. 	stupid question is this on all D17s? i have a series IV and i don't recall seeing that info when i went thru the machine last year

	Series 3 and 4 have belt driven power steering pumps and this does not apply. Only when the tractor has power steering and there isn't a belt driven pump is this an issue. What usually happens is some of the parts wear out and you have what is going on here.....oil running out of the cavity thru the tachometer cable. Quick fix is pack the cavity in gun grease. Anything is better that a dry cavity with dry gears.
