Can some one tell me the proper way to adjust the pto on my 712? If I tighten it to tight it wont disengage and try's to turn when I start it, if I loosen the nut she just slips any ideas?

Not familiar with the 712, assuming manual actuation? If so, the total “throw” of the lever should go from loose belt, no engagement, to 3/4 movement full engagement with spring compression the rest of the pull to lock. The spring allows deflection of the belt to keep it tight without slippage. Make sure you have full throw with no binding, you may have the wrong length belt?

nickia are you referring to like the lever on side of frame to engage mower. Which nut are you tightening

oh have you had that apart. That nut should be able to be tightened right up, the inner clutch part does the moving when you in gage the lever. Maybe the lock ring is messed up allowing the shaft to move.
This is from service manual if you’d like me to send you a copy of how to take apart.
